9' x 11'9" Needlepoint Rug | English Garden Black Floral | Hand-Stitched Flat Weave
A ground this black is unusual in needlepoint, and it is what makes this 9' x 11'9" piece read like a painted panel rather than a floor covering. Every inch of the surface is stitched by hand in wool over a cotton canvas, point by point, which gives it a smooth, low, tapestry-like handle instead of the plush of a knotted pile. It is new, it has never been walked on, and the color is at full strength: coral and rose roses, yellow blooms, olive and sage leaves, all sitting on unbroken black. At 9 feet by nearly 12 it covers a full seating group or a 10 seat table, which puts it squarely among 9x12 area rugs, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity.
Design and Motifs
The drawing is a true allover design with no medallion and no repeating stiffness: tawny golden branches climb the full length of the field, crossing to form a loose ogival trellis, and everything else hangs off them. Cabbage roses open at the joints, flanked by fringed carnations, five petal blossoms, tight buds, small white star flowers and pale blue forget-me-nots. Ripe peaches and plums weigh down the lower branches. Set at regular intervals are gold woven flower baskets, each holding a single large yellow rose, and perched beneath them are long-tailed birds drawn with blue wings, scarlet tail feathers and gold breasts, roughly 16 of them across the field. The borders are deliberately quiet so the garden stays the subject: a narrow chartreuse guard stripe frames the black field, then a broad plain crimson red outer band finishes all 4 sides.
A Black Field That Makes the Color Glow
The field is a dense, matte black with the faintest green cast where the light catches it, and because black absorbs rather than reflects, every flower above it reads brighter than it actually is. The roses run through a full range of pinks, from pale shell and blush at the bud through salmon and coral to a deep rose at the center of the open blooms, with several large yellow and butter gold roses acting as anchor points across the field. Foliage is shaded in 3 or 4 distinct greens, from yellow-green new growth to a grey sage and a deeper olive, and the branches are worked in bronze, ochre and warm caramel so they separate cleanly from the leaves. Accents of sky blue, white, scarlet and soft lilac appear in the small flowers and the birds. The crimson border pulls the warm side of the palette together and keeps the whole thing from floating.
Made in China: The Needlepoint Workshops
Needlepoint floor pieces of this scale are made in China today, in workshops that took over a craft that began with 18th and 19th century English and French needlework and the Aubusson tradition. The design language here is straight out of an English country house: a flowering trellis, garden birds and baskets, copied from chintz and crewelwork rather than from any weaving tradition. The work is entirely manual. A stitcher follows a hand-painted cartoon and fills the canvas one stitch at a time in wool, which is slower per square foot than knotting and is why a 9 by 12 needlepoint represents many months of labor. The result is a thin, flexible, very flat surface that lies dead level under furniture, takes a chair leg without crushing, and shows fine shading that a coarse pile cannot hold. If you are weighing this against a knotted piece, our guide to the difference between a Persian and an Oriental rug is worth 5 minutes before you decide.
