10'9" x 16'7" Persian Najafabad Rug | Allover Floral Red Field | Oversize Room Size, Excellent Condition
At 10'9" x 16'7" this Najafabad is a genuine palace format, long enough to run a 12 seat table with chairs pulled back and still show border on all 4 sides. The weave follows the Isfahan school of drawing that shaped Isfahan rugs, translated into the larger, hardier scale that Najafabad workshops built their name on: a 3/8" dense wool pile knotted on a cotton foundation, heavy underfoot and still tight and even across the whole span. Condition is excellent with full pile from end to end, and like every piece in our stock of oversize Persian rugs it ships with a certificate of authenticity.
Design and Motifs
The field is a continuous floral lattice: scrolling vines carrying palmettes, curled saz leaves and small rosettes that repeat in mirrored halves without ever falling into a flat grid. At the center sits a lobed medallion in ivory and navy, built in concentric rings around a single red rosette, with a slim pendant finial reaching toward each end of the rug. The 4 corners answer it with ivory spandrels filled with the same vine work, so the eye reads a clear medallion and corner layout even though the flowers never stop. The main border is wide and navy, alternating large open palmettes with cupped blossoms and leaf sprays, and it is held between narrow ivory and sky blue guard stripes with a small repeating vine. Drawing this much curved line at this size takes a designer's cartoon and disciplined weavers, and the corners resolve cleanly, which is the first place a weak weave gives itself away.
The Red Field and Indigo Border
The ground is a true cherry red with a cool edge to it rather than a brick or rust tone, and it stays consistent across nearly 17 feet of length, which is difficult to hold in a rug this wide. Against it, the main border reads deep indigo navy, dark enough in low light to look almost aubergine and opening into clear blue where the light falls, as in the detail photographs. Between those two dominant tones the palette does the work: ivory and cream in the medallion, spandrels and guard stripes, a soft sky blue through the leaves and blossoms, warm gold and camel in the corner vine work, with smaller touches of apricot orange, olive green and a rose pink in the flower heads. The result is a room anchor that sits comfortably with mahogany and walnut furniture, and if you are shopping the red and burgundy Persian rugs range, this is the classic version of that look.
Najafabad and the Isfahan Weaving Tradition
Najafabad lies a short drive west of Isfahan in central Persia, and its workshops have always worked from the same design vocabulary as the city: curved line, flowing vine, medallion and spandrel, palmette borders. Where the city ateliers concentrated on very fine small formats, Najafabad specialized in room and palace sizes woven for large houses, with a heavier wool pile and a sturdy cotton foundation that can take real traffic for decades. That is exactly what you have here, a substantial wool rug with the drawing of a city piece and the build of a rug meant to be walked on, and at 10'9" x 16'7" it belongs in a formal dining room, a great room or a long gallery where nothing smaller would hold the floor.
