10' x 11'9" Oushak Rug | Light Green Field with Rust and Blue Palmettes | Low Pile Hand-Knotted Wool

This 10' x 11'9" Oushak design rug is hand-knotted in wool and finished with a deliberately low, even pile that lets the drawing read clearly from across a room. The field is a soft light green that drifts toward ecru under the light, carried by an open all-over pattern of palmettes, cloudband shields and thin trailing vines rather than a single central medallion. It is a genuinely quiet room-size piece: big enough to seat a full living room set on, restrained enough to sit under an existing sofa, a walnut dining table or a four-poster bed without competing. The rug is in perfect, never-used condition and ships with a certificate of authenticity.

Design and Motifs

The layout follows the old Oushak habit of leaving air around every motif. Two large peach cloudband shields sit on the vertical axis, each flanked by flame-like rust leaves, with navy and red rosette palmettes anchoring the ends of the field and 8 petal rosettes scattered between them on thin dark vines. Nothing is crowded, and the small repeats stay legible even in the corners. The border system is built in 5 bands: a wide dusty rose main border of alternating rust and indigo palmette heads, a pair of navy guard stripes filled with a running chain of peach boteh forms, a fine red vine minor stripe, and an outer red band of ivory X motifs framed by plain undyed guard bands. Small stray fillers, a bird-like leaf here, a single navy cross there, give the drawing the hand-drawn irregularity collectors look for.

Color: Light Green, Peach and Rust with Indigo Accents

The palette is the reason to buy this one. The ground is a pale celadon light green with a gold cast, abrashed gently across the width so it never looks flat, and the main border shifts to a warm dusty rose that photographs as peach in daylight. Against those soft grounds the drawing runs in brick rust and a clear tomato red, with deep indigo blue used sparingly on the palmette hearts, the guard stripes and the fine outlining. Ivory and pale ecru highlights sit inside the rosette centers and the border X motifs, and there are touches of soft salmon and a faded seafoam in the smaller flower heads. The overall effect is a washed, sun-mellowed antique finish that reads warm and neutral, easy beside cream walls, oak floors, brass and aged leather.

Oushak Design and the Pakistani Workshop Weave

Oushak takes its name from the western Anatolian weaving town of Usak, whose open-field, soft-palette carpets became the template that decorators still ask for by name. This piece was hand-knotted in Pakistan, where the best contemporary workshops now produce this drawing with skill that matches anything being made today, and it is squarely in the tradition of the hand-knotted Oriental rug. The weave is tight and regular, the wool pile shears low and lies flat, and the back shows a clean, disciplined knot line with straight rows from end to end. Selvages are wrapped in undyed wool and the ends are firm, which matters on a 10 x 12 piece that will take chair legs and daily traffic. Low pile also means it clears most interior doors and sits cleanly under furniture.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
