10' x 13'6" Persian Kashan Rug | Red Field, Navy Medallion, Ivory Spandrels | Excellent Condition
At 10' x 13'6" this is a true room size piece, and it follows the central Persian formula that made Persian Kashan rugs the benchmark for formal floors: a deep rose-red field, a navy lobed medallion and ivory spandrels drawn in the 4 corners. The pile is fine wool on a cotton foundation, hand-knotted knot by knot, and it has come to us in excellent condition with full even pile from end to end and tight, straight selvedges. It fits the standard footprint buyers look for in 10x14 Persian rugs, with enough length to carry a long sofa run or a 10 seat table. Every rug we ship leaves with a certificate of authenticity confirming origin, materials and hand-knotted construction.
Please Note About the Photographs:
One of the full-length photos shows faint fold lines running across the red field. Those are storage creases from the rug sitting folded on a pallet in the warehouse. They are not wear, not fading and not damage, and they relax out once the rug is laid flat. Every rug is professionally steamed and pressed before it ships.
Design and Motifs
The center holds a navy lobed medallion with an ivory inner cartouche, and inside that sits a small blue and rose rosette drawn with the kind of curved line that only works on a dense weave. Above and below the medallion, 2 navy pendants run out along the vertical axis and anchor the composition. The red field around it is not left open: it is filled with a continuous arabesque of scrolling vine, palmettes, 8 petal rosettes, serrated leaves and tiny blossoms, all mirrored exactly across both axes. The 4 corner spandrels are ivory, so the eye reads the field as an oval even though there is no outline. Framing all of it is a wide navy main border of alternating palmettes and flowering vine, set between narrow blue and ivory guard stripes with a small repeating bud and leaf motif, then a final red outer edge. The close-up of the back shows how fine the drawing is held: small knots, clean outlines and no blurring where the curves turn.
The Color Palette: Rose Red, Navy and Ivory
The field red is a clear rose-toned red, cooler and brighter than a brick or rust red, and it photographs slightly more pink in the detail shots where the camera sits close to the pile. Against it, the medallion and main border run a near black navy that reads almost indigo in daylight, which is what gives the rug its depth and keeps the busy field from feeling loud. The ivory is doing the lighting work: ivory corner spandrels, ivory guard stripes and the ivory core of the medallion all pull light into the design. Through the floral drawing you will also find mid blue and sky blue blossoms, soft salmon pink, warm gold, a little sage green in the leaves and small touches of brown. That mix is what makes this one of the easier red Persian rugs to decorate around, because the secondary colors give you a route to blue, cream or green upholstery rather than locking you into red.
Kashan: Weaving Town and Weaving Quality
Kashan sits in central Persia, north of Isfahan, and its weaving goes back to the Safavid court workshops. The town kept 2 advantages that still show in this rug: soft lustrous local wool that holds color and gains sheen with use, and a workshop drawing tradition built on the red field, navy medallion and ivory spandrel formula. That formula is the one most people picture when they picture a Persian rug, and it is worth saying plainly: when you watch Shark Tank there is a Persian Kashan on the floor. Quality here is village and town workshop standard rather than master atelier fineness, which is exactly what you want in a 10' x 13'6" floor rug, because the weave is dense enough to hold the fine curved drawing while the wool is heavy enough to live under furniture for generations. The ruler photo of the back shows an even, tight knot line across the width with no abrash breaks or shifting rows, the sign of a single workshop weaving the piece straight through on a cotton foundation.
