10' x 14' Serapi Oriental Rug | Warm Red Field, Black Border | Fine Wool, Brand New

This is a brand new, never used 10' x 14' hand-knotted Oriental rug woven in India in the Serapi design, with a fine wool pile on a cotton foundation. It is a true room-size piece, one of the most useful proportions we stock among our 10x14 area rugs, long enough to seat a full sofa group or a 10 chair dining table without crowding the walls. The pile is thick and springy, the handle is heavy, and the back shows straight, even knot rows with no slack or puckering. Every rug we ship leaves Freeport with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is genuinely hand-knotted, along with its measurements, materials and origin.

Design and Motifs

The field is drawn as a true all-over composition rather than a single centre medallion, which is what makes this one of the more interesting geometric Oriental rugs at this size. Three columns of alternating devices march up the length: broad oval cartouches outlined in latch-hook flames, 8 pointed star medallions with hooked arms, and stepped camel and ivory shield forms with serrated leaf crests. Thin olive vine stems run vertically through the whole field, tying the devices together and hanging small rosettes, 4 square checkers and tiny stars between them. The main border carries a procession of hexagonal cartouches, 8 petal rosettes and curled vine brackets, framed inside and out by ivory guard bands of leaf and vine. Corners resolve cleanly with the border pattern turning at a right angle, a sign the design was properly cartooned before weaving.

Color: Warm Red Field, Black Border, Garden Greens

The field is a warm brick red, slightly tomato rather than wine, with gentle variation across the wool that reads as depth rather than streaking. Against it the main border is a near black deep navy, which is what gives the rug its graphic punch and lets the ivory guard stripes glow. The motifs are filled in a controlled palette: soft seafoam and powder blue on the oval cartouches, olive and sage green on the stars and vine stems, camel, caramel and chocolate brown on the shield devices, and clean ivory outlining almost everything. Small touches of rust and a darker ink black sharpen the centres. Overall the rug sits in the warm red and burgundy family while the greens and blues keep it from feeling heavy.

India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, and this rug shows why. The Serapi design is one of the most demanding village style patterns to reproduce at this scale, because every line is straight and angular, so a single miscount shows immediately. Here the stepped outlines stay true from one end of the 14' length to the other. The wool is a long staple fine wool with real luster, spun firmly enough that the pile stands up rather than matting, and the cotton foundation is tightly packed, which is why the rug lies flat without buckling. The back is clean and legible knot by knot, the selvedges are wrapped in red wool, and the ivory fringe is original to the warps.
