13'4" x 13'10" Square Persian Kerman Rug | Green Open Field, Rose Garland Border | Signed Cartouche

A genuine square at this scale is something very few weavers ever attempt. This 13'4" x 13'10" Persian Kerman covers roughly 184 square feet with one calm sheet of soft green wool, and the drawing is arranged for a room you walk around rather than through. The field is left almost entirely open, so the eye goes first to the rose and blue floral medallion at the center, then outward to the deep flowering border that wraps all 4 sides. It is hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation, the pile is full and even across the whole surface, and a small woven cartouche sits above the vase motif at one end. It ships with a certificate of authenticity.

Please Note About the Photographs:

The pale lines running across the open green field in several photographs are fold and roll marks from pallet storage. They are not wear, not fading and not damage. A large open ground shows storage creasing far more plainly than a busy patterned field would. The marks relax once the rug is laid flat, and every rug leaves us professionally steamed and pressed before shipping.

Design and Motifs

The center medallion is built as a lobed diamond packed with magenta arabesque scrollwork, cream rosettes, tiny 5 petal blossoms and clusters of small blue flowers, with a floral pendant reaching out from the top and bottom points. Four small bouquets echo it at a distance in the open field, keeping the balance without crowding the ground. The border is the real performance: a continuous flowering garden of roses, carnations, bell shaped buds and leafy stems that grows inward toward the field in a scalloped, cloud shaped edge rather than a hard straight line. At the midpoint of each side the garden resolves into a stylized vase with curling rose colored handles, and directly above one of them sits the small woven cartouche. There is no rigid geometry anywhere in this rug, only curved line and naturalistic plant drawing, which is exactly what the Kerman workshops built their name on.

The Green Field and Its Rose Palette

The field is a soft sage green, somewhere between celadon and young apple, and it shifts noticeably with the light and the direction of the pile, reading paler and more yellow from one end and deeper from the other. Against that ground the florals run from deep magenta and raspberry through dusty rose, salmon and blush pink to pale cream and beige, with olive and dark brown stems drawing every petal outline. The accent that lifts the whole palette is a strong teal blue used in tiny quantities, at the heart of a rosette or as small bell shaped buds, which keeps the pinks from turning sweet. Beige and ivory tones dominate the outer border ground in the flat overhead photograph, giving the piece a warm frame around the cool center. Buyers hunting specifically for green Persian rugs rarely find one this large with the field left this open.

Kerman Weaving in Southeastern Persia

Kerman sits in the southeast of Persia, and its weavers have worked to a workshop standard for centuries, drawing from full scale cartoons rather than from memory. That is why a piece like this holds perfect symmetry across 166 inches of length: every blossom in the border mirrors its partner on the opposite side. The pictorial garden border is the city's signature, and the local wool takes dye with the soft, slightly chalky bloom you see in the pinks and greens here. The cartouche marks it as a workshop piece rather than village work, and the square format tells you it was commissioned for a specific square room rather than woven on speculation. Because the footprint is closer to a ballroom than a den, it belongs with the oversize Persian rugs, and heavy as it is, it still ships free to all 50 states.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
