5'2" x 8' Persian Nain 6La Rug | Wool & Silk All-Over Floral | Approx. 500 KPSI
This is the grade of weaving that people mean when they talk about Persian Nain rugs as a benchmark. At 5'2" x 8' the piece is small enough to read as one continuous composition, and at roughly 500 knots per square inch the drawing holds its line everywhere, including inside the smallest rosettes. The pile is wool with silk worked through the outlines and flower centers, which is why the ivory tracery lifts out of the blue field as the light moves. The wool is dense, closely clipped and completely unworn, the fringes are full and untrimmed, and the rug has never been on a floor. Every rug we ship carries a certificate of authenticity confirming origin, materials and hand-knotted construction.
Design and Motifs
The field is a true all-over composition anchored by a small central rosette rather than a heavy medallion. From that center a lattice of arabesque vines runs outward in mirrored pairs, carrying palmettes, curling split leaves, tiny 8 petal blossoms and feathered acanthus scrolls that meet and cross without ever colliding. Look at the close-up photograph and you can follow a single vine from the middle of the rug out to the border, unbroken. The main border is a wide ivory band of alternating rosettes and serrated leaf forms, set between narrow navy guard stripes and a fine reciprocal outer stripe, with the corners resolved cleanly instead of being cut off mid-motif. That corner resolution is one of the fastest ways to judge whether a Nain came from a serious loom or a shortcut one.
A Blue Field Framed in Ivory
The ground reads as a clear medium blue, closer to denim or lapis than to navy, and it stays even from end to end with no visible abrash. Against it the drawing is done in a layered ivory: warm cream in the heavy vine work, a cooler near-white in the silk outlines, and a pale sea green shading inside the leaves that only shows when you stand over it. Burgundy does the accent work, appearing as small flower hearts, bud tips and the fine outer stripe of the border, and it is used sparingly enough to stay a punctuation mark rather than a second field color. The main border is ivory with blue and burgundy florals, so the whole rug frames itself, and the darker navy guard stripes and selvedge give the edge a crisp finish. Buyers working with blue Persian rugs will find this one sits comfortably with both cool grays and warm oak floors.
Nain, 6La and Why the Knot Count Matters
Nain sits on the edge of the central Persian desert near Isfahan, and its weavers built their reputation in the 20th century on precision rather than on age. The La system counts the plies twisted into each knot: fewer plies means a thinner yarn, a smaller knot and finer drawing, so a Nain 6La rug is a serious step above the 9La work that fills most of the market. At approximately 500 knots per square inch on a cotton foundation, this piece can hold a curved vine and a 3 color flower head inside a space the width of a fingernail. The back photograph shows the knot nodes packed tight and regular, the weft lines straight, and the fringe as a continuation of the warps rather than a sewn-on addition. That is loom work, not finishing work, and it is the difference between a rug that looks fine and a rug that is fine.
