5'5" x 7'1" Chinese Pictorial Tapestry Rug | French Garden Scene | Flat Weave Wall Hanging

This is a hand-woven pictorial tapestry measuring 5'5" x 7'1", built as a flat weave with no pile so the whole surface works like a woven painting. The scene is a courting party in a garden: a young man in a crimson coat and tricorn hat leaning toward a woman in a blue bodice and apricot skirt, a second woman kneeling in rose pink beside an overturned water jar, a carved stone fountain spilling an arc of water, and a pair of white doves on the lower steps. Because it carries no pile and weighs very little for its size, it hangs beautifully on a wall and also lies flat as a light-use floor piece in a sitting room or study, which makes it an unusual option among 5x7 Oriental rugs. The back-tag photograph shows the original dealer tag and the honest cotton warp ends along the finished edge. Condition is perfect, and the piece ships with our certificate of authenticity confirming it as genuine hand-woven work.

Please Note About the Photographs:

A flat tapestry weave has no pile to absorb light, so the surface reflects differently depending on the camera angle. In the angled floor photographs the open sky and ground read lighter and faintly ribbed, while the straight overhead shots show the same areas as soft ivory and green. That shift is the nature of the weave, not wear, fading or damage. Every piece is professionally steamed and pressed before it ships.

Design and Motifs

The drawing follows the French Rococo garden tradition that tapestry workshops have copied for centuries. Three figures hold the center: the kneeling woman in rose pink with a cream sash and a shepherd's staff, the man in the crimson coat and dark knee breeches, and the seated woman in blue and apricot holding a small bouquet. Behind them a pink stone fountain carved with a reclining cherub sends a thin white arc of water across the upper right, framed by a leaning tree trunk on the left and layered teal and olive foliage overhead. The foreground is the most painterly part of the weave: full pink roses with blue green leaves at the lower left, narcissus clumps at the right, a cluster of pale iris on the bottom step, and two white doves tucked into the corner beside trailing ivy. A narrow salmon outer band encloses a wide guard border of repeating palmette and scroll medallions in ivory, tan and soft brown, drawn with the shaded outlines that give the border its carved, picture-frame look.

A Soft Antique-Toned Palette of Rose, Sage and Ivory

The palette is deliberately muted, the gentle faded register of old European tapestry rather than bright modern dye. Sky and background open ground are a pale ivory with a greenish cast; the garden foliage runs from deep teal and forest green through olive and dusty sage; the paved steps and fountain shade from mauve into warm pink-brown. Against that quiet field the costumes carry the saturation: a true crimson coat, a dusty rose dress, a clear slate blue bodice, and an apricot gold skirt with ivory highlights. Roses and narcissus add pink and cream accents at floor level, and the entire picture is held by the salmon and tan border, the warmest tone in the piece. Listed simply as multi-colored, it reads overall as a warm blush and green neutral, which is why it sits easily on a beige or plaster wall as shown in the room photograph.

Made in China in the Aubusson Tapestry Tradition

This piece was made in China, where weaving workshops have specialized for decades in flat tapestry reproductions of French Aubusson and Gobelins cartoons, and they are now among the few places in the world still producing this kind of figural work by hand at a sensible price. The technique is different from a knotted Oriental rug: instead of tying knots onto a warp, the weaver builds the image in discontinuous weft passes, changing color wherever the drawing changes, which is why faces, hands and folded drapery can be shaded so finely. The close-up photographs show how much control that takes, with the eyes, the brim of the tricorn hat and the shadow inside the apricot skirt all built from narrow blocks of weft. The edges are finished cleanly, the back is flat and tidy, and the piece is recent and in perfect condition, ready to hang or to lay.
