6'6" x 9'8" Kazak Oriental Rug | Triple Geometric Medallion on Red | Brand New Hand-Knotted Wool
This is a brand new, never used Kazak piece, knotted entirely in natural wool on a cotton foundation and finished with the heavy, substantial handle that makes this group so easy to live with. At 6'6" x 9'8" it sits squarely in the 7x10 Oriental rug range, big enough to carry a sofa and two chairs with pattern still showing around the furniture, as the room photograph shows. The pile is clipped at medium height, the selvages are tight and even, and the fringe is clean white cotton with no repairs, no stains and no wear of any kind. Every rug we ship travels with a certificate of authenticity confirming that it is 100% hand-knotted by hand on a loom, one knot at a time.
Design and Motifs
The field runs a column of 3 medallions down the length of the rug. The 2 outer medallions are broad cruciform shapes with hooked arms and ivory grounds, each holding a stepped blue cartouche around a small 8 petal rosette. The center medallion is a serrated diamond, drawn in sky blue with a toothed ivory frame and a red heart filled with leaf forms, and it is flanked by blossoming stems and dark feathered leaves that fan out into the open red ground. Paired blue and camel vine brackets fill the 4 corners of the field, and small detached rosettes, stars and ivory bird forms scatter across the red to keep the spacing lively rather than rigid. The wide ivory main border alternates hooked diamond cartouches with diagonal serrated leaf panels, held between narrow camel and blue guard stripes of 4 petal florets. It is textbook drawing for geometric rugs of this family, every line straight, every curve built from steps, and it reads as crisply from across a room as it does up close. Anyone who likes tribal rugs will recognize the vocabulary immediately.
A Tomato Red Field With Sky Blue and Ivory
The field is a rich, slightly warm red, closer to tomato than to burgundy, and it carries a gentle variation from knot to knot that you can see in the close-up photographs where the wool catches the light. Against it the medallions are drawn in 2 distinct blues: a mid sky blue for the open medallion grounds and a much darker navy for outlines, toothed edges and the thin dividing stripes. Ivory and soft beige do the structural work, filling the main border and the medallion frames so the design stays legible, while a dull camel tan appears in the corner brackets, one guard stripe and parts of the border cartouches. The green accents are small but important: an olive to chartreuse used in leaf tips, rosette centers and tiny florets, which lifts the red and blue and stops the palette from feeling heavy. A handful of pure white motifs in the field, along with occasional plum and rose notes in the border flowers, finish the balance. Overall it is a clear, high-contrast red and ivory rug that works against pale walls and dark wood floors alike.
Kazak Weaving and the Quality of This Rug
Kazak is a design name from the southern Caucasus, and the back tag on this piece states plainly what it is: hand-knotted in Pakistan in 100% natural wool. The weaving centers of Pakistan have specialized in this family for decades and are now among the most reliable sources in the world for hand-knotted Kazak work, which is exactly why these rugs offer so much weave for the money. Turn the corner over, as in the folded photograph, and the knot rows run straight and uniform, the pattern reads sharply on the reverse, and the ribbing of the cotton warps is regular from edge to edge, all signs of a well tensioned loom and a disciplined weaver. The wool is springy and durable with a quiet sheen, the kind of pile that recovers from furniture and heavy foot traffic instead of flattening. If you are weighing up where this piece sits in the wider market, our guide to the difference between Persian and Oriental rugs explains the categories in plain language.
