6'7" x 10'2" Persian Tabriz Rug | Cream Field, Deer and Bird Motifs | Approx. 400 KPSI
This is a fine 60 Raj Tabriz, hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation at roughly 400 knots per square inch, and the extra knot count is doing real work here: the vine scrolls curve cleanly, the small animals keep their outlines, and the medallion holds its shape without a single wobbly line. The field reads cream with a warm honey undertone, the corner spandrels are a deep camel gold, and the medallion sits in soft sage green. At 6'7" x 10'2" it lands squarely in the most useful of the 7x10 Persian rugs range, large enough to anchor a seating group yet still easy to place. The piece is brand new, never walked on, and ships with a certificate of authenticity.
Please Note About the Photographs:
The two macro shots of the field and the ruler photo were taken under warm showroom lighting and read more yellow than the rug actually is. The true field color is cream with a gentle ivory cast, as shown in the full overhead image. Nothing about the wool has changed between the photos, only the light.
Design and Motifs
The drawing follows the classic Tabriz workshop formula and then quietly goes further. A round, deeply lobed medallion sits dead center, built from layered rings of palmettes and serrated leaves with a small rosette at its heart, finished top and bottom with slender pendants. Four corner spandrels in solid camel gold frame the field and carry their own scrolling vine. What makes this one worth a close look is the animal work scattered through the ground: leaping deer and gazelles, small birds perched on flowering stems, and pairs of long-tailed birds facing one another across a palmette. The all-over field between them is filled with rosettes, cloud bands, curling saz leaves and fine tendrils that never collide. The border system runs three deep, a wide main band of connected floral cartouches flanked by narrow sage guard stripes on either side.
A Cream Ground Lit with Sage, Gold and Rust
Cream is the governing color and it covers most of the surface, which is what keeps a rug this detailed from feeling heavy. Against it the palette is soft rather than loud: sage and olive green through the medallion and the guard borders, camel and antique gold in the spandrels and the main border ground, rust and terracotta in the palmettes and larger blossoms, and burgundy deepening the flower centers. Small hits of sky blue and navy appear inside the medallion and in the tiny bud forms across the field, and warm brown outlines every motif so the drawing stays crisp from standing height. Beige and ivory tones carry the vine work and the animals themselves. If you are furnishing around neutrals, this sits comfortably with other cream and ivory Persian rugs while giving you far more to look at.
Tabriz Weaving in Northwest Persia
Tabriz sits in the northwest corner of Persia and has been the country's most organized weaving city for centuries, the place where master designers draw a cartoon and a workshop executes it knot for knot. Fineness there is measured in Raj, the count of knots across a gereh of about 2.75 inches: 40 Raj is ordinary commercial goods, 50 is genuinely fine, and 60 Raj, roughly 400 knots per square inch, is the grade where curved lines and small pictorial figures become possible. This rug is a 60 Raj piece, which is exactly why the deer have legs and the birds have beaks instead of stepped approximations. The wool is tightly packed and evenly clipped, the back is uniform, and the selvages and ivory cotton fringe are handled the way a workshop piece should be.
