6'7" x 9'11" Persian Tabriz Rug | Red Field, Navy Lobed Medallion | Fine Wool Pile, Excellent Condition

This is a classically drawn Tabriz in a size that solves a lot of rooms: at 6'7" x 9'11" it sits squarely in the 7x10 Persian rugs range, long enough to anchor a sofa and two chairs without crowding the walls. The pile is fine wool clipped to 3/8", short enough to keep the drawing crisp and tight enough that the detail in the medallion stays legible from standing height. The back shot shows an even, well packed weave with straight rows and no repairs, and the condition is excellent throughout, with full pile and sound, original selvedges and fringe. Every rug we sell ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming origin, materials and hand-knotted construction.

Please Note About the Photographs:

The studio photographs were shot under cool, even light and read slightly cooler and more raspberry, while the on-floor photograph was taken in warm daylight, which pushes the ivory corners toward tan and the field toward crimson. The true color sits between the two: a deep red ground with indigo blue-black borders. This is lighting, not fading and not a color variation in the rug itself.

Design and Motifs

The layout is the classic lachak toranj, a central medallion with matching corner brackets, drawn in full curvilinear style rather than village geometry. At the center sits an 8 petal rosette inside a scalloped ivory cartouche, ringed by navy lobed palmettes and tiny boteh forms, with slender finials rising and falling from the medallion on the long axis. The open red field is not left bare: four arcing floral sprays of roses, carnations and feathered leaves fan out from the medallion toward the corners, and small bouquets drift into the spandrels. The ivory corner brackets carry heavy arabesque vine scroll with rosette heads, and the deep navy main border runs a measured alternation of palmettes and cypress-like leaf forms between narrow pale blue guard stripes of connected rosettes. The drawing is symmetrical on both axes and the cartoon is followed tightly, which is what separates workshop Tabriz work from looser regional copies of the same pattern.

A Deep Red Field Framed in Indigo Blue-Black

The field is a saturated madder-toned red that leans slightly toward raspberry where the light catches the wool, with the natural abrash of a hand-dyed ground giving the open areas a soft, living depth rather than a flat print. Against it the main border reads as a near-black indigo, dark enough to pass for black in shadow and clearly blue where the light hits the knot tips, which is why the color listing names both. Between field and border sit the ivory and cream corners, warm rather than stark white, filled with pale ice blue, sage green, dusty rose and old gold. The medallion itself gathers all of those notes: cream base, navy outlines, a brick red rosette heart with a soft blue center, and small accents of green and apricot in the surrounding palmettes. The result is a true red rug for buyers shopping red and burgundy Persian rugs, warm enough for traditional interiors but cooled by the blues and ivories so it does not overwhelm a room.

Woven in Tabriz, Northwest Persia

Tabriz sits in the northwest of Persia and has been the country's most commercially disciplined weaving city for centuries, the place where the medallion and corner format was codified and exported to the rest of the rug world. Tabriz weavers work on vertical looms to a drawn cartoon and measure fineness in Raj, the number of knots across a gereh of roughly 2.75 inches, which is why the city's output is so consistent from piece to piece. This rug shows that discipline: a cotton foundation under a short, evenly clipped wool pile, tidy rows on the reverse, and borders that turn the corner cleanly instead of being fudged. Buyers comparing this against other Persian Tabriz rugs should note the combination here of a formal, fully resolved cartoon with a hard-wearing 3/8" wool pile, which makes it a rug for an actual living room floor rather than a piece to be protected.
