6' x 9' Pakistani Kashan Rug | Wool and Silk | Black and Burgundy
A 6' x 9' rectangular rug hand-knotted in Pakistan in wool and silk, carrying a Kashan design. From across a room it reads as a dark panel of scrolling flowers held inside a deep red frame, with a thin pale line separating the two. Up close the field fills in: hundreds of small rosettes, buds and curling leaves on fine stems, drawn in ivory, rose and sage against ground so dark it holds the pattern at arm's length. One of several thousand hand-knotted rugs we carry.
The design
There is no medallion. The field is a continuous vine system, symmetrical about the long axis, where every stem ends in a palmette, a lotus rosette or a serrated leaf that curls back on itself. Small comma-shaped flecks fill the gaps between stems so that very little of the ground is left empty. The main border runs a single file of large rosettes linked by a thin meander, and is flanked on both sides by a wider guard band carrying a smaller version of the same flower. Inside those sits a narrow ivory stripe, which is what gives the field its clean edge in the full-length photographs.
The colour
The ground is a flat, near-neutral black, dense enough that the drawing sits on top of it rather than in it. The main border is a burgundy closer to dried wine than to scarlet, and the two are kept apart by bands of soft sage green, the colour listed in the table as green. The flowers themselves are ivory and cream, shaded through to a dusty rose at the petal centres, with the occasional small leaf picked out in a deeper green. The silk highlights catch the light in the corner photograph, where the pale stems brighten against the dark ground as the pile turns.
The making
Hand-knotted in Pakistan with a pile of wool and silk. The back, shown against a tape measure in the last photograph, is even and tightly packed, with the knot lines clear and the drawing legible from the reverse. The ends finish in plain ivory fringe and the sides are overcast in dark wool. The table records it as new and in perfect condition, and the pile stands full height throughout, with no visible wear at the edges or in the centre.
