7' x 7'6" Square Persian Sarouk Rug | Dark Coral All Over Floral Field | Ivory Palmette Border | Excellent Condition

Square rugs in this format are hard to find, and harder still in a classic Sarouk drawing. This 7' x 7'6" piece measures almost exactly square, 84" across by 90" long, which makes it the right answer for a square breakfast room, a card table, a landing, or a seating group built around a square coffee table. The field is a deep coral, closer to rose than to brick, and it is covered edge to edge with small detached floral sprays worked in ivory, navy, teal and wine. The pile is 3/8" wool on a cotton foundation, still full and even across the whole surface, and the condition is excellent with no repairs, no stains and no thin spots. Every rug we ship carries a certificate of authenticity recording the origin, materials, hand-knotted construction and measurements.

Please Note About the Photographs:

The soft horizontal lines visible in the close-up photograph are fold and roll marks from pallet storage. They are not wear, not fading and not damage. Marks of this kind relax out once the rug is laid flat, and every rug leaves us professionally steamed and pressed before shipping.

Design and Motifs

The layout is the one Sarouk weavers are known for: a fine curving vine runs across the field and closes into an ogee lattice, and each compartment holds its own bouquet of detached flowers, buds and curled leaves. Nothing repeats mechanically, so the all over floral design reads as a garden rather than a stamped pattern, and the rug can be turned in any direction without a wrong orientation. At the center the lattice tightens into a lozenge of concentric rosettes and palmettes, enough of a medallion to anchor the composition without breaking the all over rhythm. The main border is a wide ivory band carrying alternating palmettes and rose clusters joined by a thin scrolling vine, flanked inside and out by teal guard stripes of small leaf and bird-like floral forms, with narrow serrated zigzag stripes separating each band. The outer edge finishes in plain coral kilim ends and natural ivory fringe, visible in the corner photograph.

Color Palette

The dominant note is dark coral, a warm salmon rose ground that photographs slightly brighter under direct light and settles into a softer terracotta pink in daylight. Against it the florals are drawn in ivory and cream, which give the field its sparkle, with deep navy and near black outlines holding each spray in shape, mid teal blue in the leaf work and guard borders, and burgundy wine in the rosette centers. Sage green stems and small touches of camel and soft blush pink appear throughout the bouquets, and the ivory main border lifts the whole piece by framing the coral in a lighter tone. It is a palette that sits easily with warm woods, brass, cream upholstery and either navy or olive accents, and it belongs in the broader family of red and burgundy Persian rugs without reading as a dark red rug.

Origin and Weaving Quality

Sarouk is a weaving village in the Arak district of west central Persia, and the Persian Sarouk weaving tradition is built on two things: heavy, long-staple local wool and a dense double-wefted construction that packs the knots tight against a cotton warp. That is what you feel in the handle here, a rug with real weight and body for a 7' x 7'6" piece, and it is why Sarouks became the floor rug of choice in American homes through the 20th century and still survive decades of traffic with the pile intact. The back photograph shows the knotting clearly: regular rows, clean nodes, no gaps, the mark of an experienced village weaver working a curvilinear floral cartoon rather than a simple geometric repeat. Drawing this many small floral sprays in perfect balance across a near square format takes a weaver who can read the design and adjust it at the borders, and the corners on this rug resolve cleanly on all 4 sides.

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
