8'2" x 11'10" Persian Kashan Rug | Ivory Field, Sage Border | Signed Workshop Piece

Most Kashans arrive in the familiar red and navy formula, which is exactly why this one stops you. The weaver kept the classic architecture, a lobed central medallion with matching corner spandrels, and then drained the color down to ivory, sage green and soft taupe, with only flickers of navy and olive gold holding the drawing together. It measures 8'2" x 11'10", a true room size, and the border carries a woven cartouche signing the piece. If you want the background on this weaving group before you buy, our Persian Kashan rug guide walks through the workshop tradition in detail. Every rug we ship leaves Freeport with a certificate of authenticity recording origin, materials and measurements.

Design and Motifs

The center holds a stepped, lobed medallion in taupe and pale grey, outlined twice in navy, with an 8 petal rosette at its heart and long cusped pendants running toward each end. Four quarter spandrels repeat the same shape in the corners, so the eye reads the field as a single framed panel rather than a loose scatter. Between medallion and spandrels the ivory ground is filled edge to edge with curving vine, split palmettes, serrated saz leaves and small rosettes, the drawing turning in true curves rather than the angular village line you see further north. Three borders surround the field: a broad sage main band of alternating palmettes and flower heads, flanked by narrow guard stripes of light blue meander and tiny buds. The signature cartouche sits within the border on one end, framed by navy scrollwork, the mark of a workshop weaver who put a name to the finished piece.

A Quiet Palette of Ivory, Sage and Navy

The field is a warm ivory, closer to unbleached cream than white, and it gives the whole rug its light. Over it the floral work is drawn in two blues, a deep navy for the outlines and stems and a powdery light blue for the petals, so the pattern reads clearly without ever turning dark. The medallion and the main border share a soft sage green that shifts toward grey and taupe depending on the light, and small notes of olive gold, dusty rose, cinnamon brown and a few pinpoints of red are scattered through the flower heads to keep the surface alive up close. It is a genuinely neutral rug that still has color in it, which makes it easy to live with next to grey upholstery, pale oak or walnut, and it sits comfortably alongside other ivory and beige Persian rugs.

Kashan: The Town and the Weave

Kashan sits in central Persia, north of Isfahan, and its workshops trace their drawing straight back to the Safavid court weavers. The town is known for soft, lustrous local wool and for a dense, tightly packed knot on a cotton foundation, which is why a Kashan holds a curved line so well and why the pile wears evenly for generations. When you watch Shark Tank there is a Persian Kashan on the floor, which tells you how completely this design has settled into American interiors. This piece is a workshop weave rather than a village one: the pile is an even 3/8", the selvedges are tight, the back is regular, and the drawing stays consistent from one end of nearly 12 feet to the other.
