8'4" x 12'3" Afghan Super Kazak Rug | Green Shirvan Geometric Design | Brand New, Never Used
Green is the rarest ground color in the Kazak repertoire, and this 8'4" x 12'3" piece commits to it fully: a deep, slightly variegated forest green field carrying dozens of ivory, red and blue tribal medallions out to a broad madder red border. It is hand-knotted in natural super quality wool on a cotton foundation, brand new and never used, with a thick even pile and crisp geometric drawing that reads clearly from across a room. The Shirvan layout gives it a formality that most village-style geometric rugs lack, while the handspun-looking wool keeps the surface warm rather than mechanical. Every rug we sell ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming that it is genuinely hand-knotted, along with its size, material and origin.
Please Note About the Photographs:
The soft diagonal lines visible in the full-length photographs are fold marks and shadows from rolled storage on the pallet. They are not wear, not fading and not damage. They relax out once the rug is laid flat, and every rug is professionally steamed and pressed before it leaves our warehouse.
Design and Motifs
The field is an all over design built from repeating rows of tribal guls, 8 pointed stars, hooked diamonds, cruciform crosses and small stepped octagons, each one outlined so cleanly that the individual motifs never blur into one another. At the center sits a single large ivory octagon medallion with a red and navy interior cross, stepped latch hook edges and four small anchor arms reaching into the green ground, the only element in the composition that breaks the repeat and gives the eye somewhere to settle. Between the larger devices the weaver scattered small 4 petal rosettes, tiny stars and detached leaf forms, a filler vocabulary that is pure Caucasian. The border system is unusually deep for this size: a wide red main band of blue and ivory rosettes alternating with leaf cartouches, flanked by a reciprocal running dog stripe, a Greek key meander, a barber pole guard and a chevron outer band, so the framing accounts for nearly a third of the rug's width.
A Forest Green Field Against Madder Red and Ivory
The ground is a dark bottle green with a natural abrash, shifting between a cool spruce tone in the corners and a lighter sea green where the light catches the pile, exactly the movement you expect from wool dyed in small batches. Against it, the motifs run through soft madder red, warm brick, apricot, saffron gold, clear cream ivory and two distinct blues: a deep indigo in the medallion outlines and a bright sky blue in the star centers. The main border is a slightly brick-toned red, warmer and softer than the reds inside the field, with ivory and pale blue figures floating on it. Cream guard stripes separate every band so the palette stays legible rather than crowded. Practically, a green rug of this depth grounds oak, walnut and leather beautifully and sits far more comfortably with cool wall colors than the usual red-field alternative.
Super Kazak Weaving in Afghanistan
Super Kazak is the top grade of contemporary Afghan weaving, made by workshops in northern Afghanistan who work from 19th century Caucasian Kazak and Shirvan cartoons. The word super refers to the wool and the finish: highland fleece, hand-carded and spun for a slightly irregular yarn that takes dye unevenly in the best way, then knotted at a higher density than standard village Kazaks and clipped to a medium pile. The back photograph shows tight, regular rows and a firmly wrapped selvage, the marks of an experienced weaver rather than a rushed one. As an Oriental rug, this is a piece built for use: dense wool, durable geometry, and a scale that fills a full living or dining room without needing a border of bare floor to make sense of it.
