8'7" x 10'8" Super Kazak Rug | Blue Field, All-Over Star Medallions | Fine Natural Wool
This is a Super Kazak in the size most rooms actually want, 8'7" x 10'8", hand-knotted in Pakistan from 100% natural wool on a cotton foundation. The wool is the reason to stop and look: hand-spun, glossy, and dyed in tones that already read as settled rather than new, so the denim blue ground shifts gently from panel to panel in natural light. It is an Oriental rug in the Caucasian tradition, never used, with full even pile, a straight blue selvedge and clean cotton fringe at both ends. Every rug we ship carries a certificate of authenticity, and this one sits squarely in the sweet spot for buyers shopping 8x11 hand-knotted area rugs.
Design and Motifs
The field is an all-over lattice of 8 pointed star medallions, each one drawn as a serrated diamond with a small stepped cartouche at its center and latch-hook arms reaching into the ground. No two adjacent stars repeat the same color pairing, so the rhythm stays lively across the whole field instead of settling into a grid. Between them float small hooked rosettes and single blossoms, the kind of filler that tells you the weaver was working from memory rather than a rigid cartoon. The main border is a wide ivory band of angular palmettes and diamond bosses, flanked by an olive vine stripe, a navy hooked-leaf stripe and narrow barber-pole guards, with a plain blue outer stripe closing the whole composition. The drawing is bold, angular and completely legible from across a room, which is exactly what buyers want from geometric rugs of this scale.
A Denim Blue Field Lit by Rust, Ivory and Gold
The ground is a mid denim blue with visible abrash, lighter and chalkier in some rows, deeper and greyer in others, the honest signature of small-batch dye lots and hand-spun yarn. Against it the star medallions run through brick red, soft terracotta, apricot, saffron gold, olive green and deep indigo navy, with ivory and pale blush used to outline and separate them so nothing muddies. The main border is a warm undyed ivory that reads cream in daylight, and the secondary stripes pick up olive and sage. Close up the red is a clean madder tone rather than a hot commercial red, and the gold has a real amber warmth in the pile. For a room built on greys, walnut and brass, as in the setting photograph, this is a forgiving palette, and it sits comfortably with other blue area rugs without the coldness of a synthetic blue.
Super Kazak Weaving and Quality
Kazak designs come out of the Caucasus, and the Super Kazak is the modern revival of that vocabulary, woven today by highly skilled workshop weavers in Pakistan working with highland wool that is hand-spun before it is dyed. Super refers to grade, not marketing: tighter knotting, finer yarn and cleaner drawing than a standard Kazak, with the pile clipped low enough to hold the outlines of every star and hook. Turn the corner over and the back shows the pattern crisply knot by knot on a cotton warp, with a hand-wrapped blue selvedge and hand-knotted fringe rather than machine binding. Hand-spun wool of this grade takes dye unevenly by nature, wears slowly, and gains sheen underfoot, which is why a good Super Kazak in excellent condition stays in service for generations of daily traffic.
