8' x 10'2" Serapi Oriental Rug | Ivory Field Geometric Medallion | New, Never Used

This 8' x 10'2" rug is a brand new, hand-knotted Serapi design worked in wool on a cotton foundation, and it has never been on a floor. The drawing is the classic Serapi formula: a wide ivory field carrying a deep navy medallion, with burgundy rust corners closing the composition and a navy main border holding it all together. It sits squarely in the most useful of all the 8x10 Oriental rugs we carry, large enough to anchor a sofa group or seat a dining table, light enough in tone to brighten a room rather than darken it. As with every Oriental rug we sell, it ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is genuinely hand-knotted, with its size, materials and origin recorded.

Design and Motifs

The center holds a small 8 petal rosette in ivory and sage, set inside a burgundy star medallion with gold outlines and curling split leaf arms, which in turn floats on a navy lozenge filled with slender vines and open flowerheads. Around that navy panel, the ivory field opens into a broad cartouche shape drawn with stepped, angular outlines, filled with pale blue and rose rosettes, serrated leaves, hooked tendrils and small bud sprays. The 4 corners are burgundy rust spandrels carrying scrolling vines and a large gold and sage palmette at each diagonal, with smaller gold cartouche motifs tucked into the outer corners. A pair of stepped crenellated panels sit top and bottom of the field, a detail typical of the best geometric medallion rugs. The navy main border runs a reciprocal lattice of flowering vines, framed on both sides by narrow ivory guard stripes of linked rosettes.

The Color Palette: Ivory, Navy and Burgundy Rust

The field is a warm ivory, closer to soft cream and old parchment than to white, and it carries most of the surface area, which is why the rug reads as light and airy in person. Against it, the medallion panel and the main border are a deep indigo navy blue, dark enough to look almost black in low light and clearly blue under daylight. The spandrels and the medallion core are a burgundy rust, a brick toned red with a brown undertone rather than a bright cherry. Running through the detail work are the accents that make the piece: muted olive and sage green in the leaves, soft rose and salmon pink in the rosettes, and clear gold in the palmettes and medallion outlines. The abrash is minimal, the tones are even from end to end, and the plain ivory warp fringe finishes both ends cleanly.

Origin and Weaving Quality

This rug was made in Pakistan, now one of the strongest centers in the world for serious hand-knotted work and the main source for the classic Serapi design in new production. It is knotted entirely by hand, wool pile on a cotton foundation, and the back tells you the rest: tight, even rows, crisp knot definition and clean color separation where the burgundy meets the ivory. The pile is a good medium height with a dry, resilient handle, the kind of wool that takes furniture weight and vacuuming without flattening. Angular designs like this one punish a careless weaver, because every stepped outline and every straight vine shows immediately if the tension drifts, and here the medallion lines stay true across the full 10'2" length. For a buyer who wants the look of a classic village medallion rug in brand new, never used condition, this is the honest, well made version of it.
