8' x 10' Serapi Heriz Rug | Brick Red Field with Navy Geometric Medallion | Hand-Knotted Wool, Made in India
This is a brand new, never used hand-knotted Oriental rug in the Serapi Heriz style, woven in India at 8' x 10' on a cotton foundation with a medium, densely packed wool pile. The drawing is confident and large in scale: a single navy geometric medallion anchored in a brick red field, ivory corner spandrels that fill the four corners, and a wide navy main border carrying rosettes and leaf forms. Image 13 shows the back and the hand woven tag as the rug came in, and the reverse in image 8 shows an even, tightly packed knot across the whole width. The pile has body underfoot without being shaggy, which is exactly what you want in a room that gets daily traffic. A certificate of authenticity is included with every rug we ship.
Design and Motifs
Everything in this rug is drawn with straight lines and steps rather than curves, which is the signature of the Serapi Heriz formula and the reason it sits so comfortably alongside other geometric medallion rugs. The center holds a navy 8 pointed medallion with a small stepped square at its heart, ringed by light blue and tan sawtooth outlines, with 4 hooked arms reaching out toward the field. Above and below the medallion sit large palmette sprays in light blue and tan, flanked by serrated sage green leaves and small star rosettes scattered through the open red ground. The ivory spandrels repeat the same vocabulary at a smaller scale, with angular vine scrolls, tan cartouches and little tree forms. The main border runs a classic navy ground with a red and ivory meander, rosette clusters and leaf shapes, framed on both sides by a narrow ivory floral guard stripe and an outer sage green line, visible in close detail in images 7 and 10.
Brick Red, Navy and Ivory: The Color Story
The field is a true brick red, warm rather than orange, with the slight variation across the surface that hand-dyed wool gives you when the light moves across the pile. Against it the navy is deep and almost ink dark in the medallion core, lifting to a cleaner midnight blue across the main border. Ivory does the structural work: it fills the 4 corner spandrels, outlines the medallion and runs as the floral guard stripe on both sides of the border, which keeps the red and navy from sitting flat against each other. The secondary palette is where the rug gets its character. Sage green appears in the serrated leaves and the outermost border line, light blue cools the palmettes and the sawtooth medallion rings, and tan and soft gold warm the cartouches and rosettes. Shoppers searching for red and burgundy area rugs will find this a forgiving tone in practice, since it reads rich under lamplight and brightens considerably in daylight, as the two floor sets here show.
Made in India: Weave and Quality
India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, and this rug is a clear example of why. It is knotted one knot at a time on a cotton warp, with hand-spun quality wool chosen for the Serapi Heriz tradition: coarse enough to wear well, lustrous enough to take dye with depth. The back shows straight selvedges, an even beat-down and no pulling at the corners, which is the mark of a disciplined loom rather than a rushed one. Serapi Heriz designs were never meant to be fine; their strength is bold drawing at a village knot count, and this weave hits that target with the clarity you can see in the macro of the medallion. For a buyer comparing 8x10 Oriental rugs, this is the practical end of the category: heavy enough to lie flat without a pad fighting it, dense enough to take chairs and foot traffic, and traditional enough to sit under almost any furniture.
