9'7" x 13'2" Persian Kashan Rug | Red Floral Field with Ivory Medallion | Excellent Condition

This 9'7" x 13'2" rug is the central Persian formula done properly: a red field packed edge to edge with curling floral vine, a navy lobed medallion carrying an ivory and sky blue core, and a deep navy main border holding the whole composition together. The drawing stays disciplined at this scale, with the field pattern mirrored cleanly across both axes and the 4 corner spandrels matching each other closely. The 3/8" wool pile still stands full and even, and the reverse photograph shows a tight, regular knot structure on a cotton foundation with original ivory fringe at both ends. Among Persian Kashan rugs this reads as a well kept workshop piece rather than a decorative imitation, and it ships with our certificate of authenticity confirming it as hand-knotted in Persia.

Design and Motifs

The center holds a small ivory diamond cartouche with a sky blue inner panel and a single 8 petal rosette at its heart, set inside a navy lobed medallion whose outline breaks into hooked, stepped scrolls. Slender pendants run off the medallion toward each end, and the navy spandrels at the 4 corners repeat the same ivory outlined scrollwork so the eye reads one continuous drawing. Across the field, thin ivory and olive vines carry palmettes, serrated leaves, rosettes and small five petal blossoms, with tiny paired flower heads filling the gaps between the larger forms. The border system is a classic Kashan triple arrangement: a wide navy main band of alternating palmettes and arabesque vine, flanked by sky blue guard stripes of small repeating blossoms, then a narrow ivory outer stripe and a plain red selvage edge. At 9'7" x 13'2" the pattern has room to breathe, which is exactly what this layout wants, and it sits in the same proportion family as our other 10x13 Persian rugs.

A Closer Look at the Colors

The ground is a warm madder red that leans brick in the overhead shot and brightens toward tomato where the light catches the pile, with the natural variation in tone you expect from hand dyed wool worked across a loom this wide. Against it the medallion and borders drop to a very dark navy that approaches black in the close detail, which is what gives the red its punch. Ivory does the structural work: it outlines the medallion, tips the spandrels, draws the vine and forms the outer stripe, and it shows as a clean oyster white rather than a bleached one. The secondary palette is where the piece earns the multi-color description, with soft sky blue panels, olive and sage green leaves, salmon and rose pink blossoms, saffron gold accents, chestnut brown stems and small touches of plum. Anyone shopping red and burgundy Persian rugs for a room with wood floors and warm neutrals will find this an easy piece to build around.

Kashan: The Weaving Town and the Weave

Kashan sits in central Persia, north of Isfahan, and its weaving reputation goes back to the Safavid court workshops that first codified the medallion and vine layout seen here. Local wool is soft and lustrous, which is why Kashan pile takes dye so cleanly and keeps a slight sheen as it ages, and why the town's classic formula of red field, navy lobed medallion and ivory spandrels became the most recognized Persian design in the world. When you watch Shark Tank there is a Persian Kashan on the floor. Technically this is town workshop weaving rather than village work: the knotting is fine and consistent, the curved outlines of the medallion and vine hold their line without stepping, and the selvages and both end finishes are intact and original. The pile measures 3/8" and remains even from border to border, so the full detail of the drawing is still sitting proud of the foundation.
