9'8" x 13' Persian Tabriz Rug | Indigo Herati Field with Salmon Medallion | Semi-Antique
This is a room size piece with real age on it, hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation and still holding a full, even 3/8" pile from selvedge to selvedge. The field is dark indigo, covered edge to edge in the small Herati lattice, with a single salmon diamond medallion floating at center and two large ivory spandrels anchoring the long ends. At 9'8" x 13' it sits squarely in the most useful of all room proportions, which is why so many buyers searching 10x13 Persian rugs land here first. Every rug we ship travels with a certificate of authenticity recording the origin, materials, knotting and measurements shown above.
Please Note About the Photographs:
The close-up of the center medallion was taken under warm showroom lighting and reads considerably more orange and gold than the rug actually is. The overhead and floor photographs are the accurate reference: the field is a deep indigo and the medallion and borders are a dark salmon rose, not bright orange. Please judge the color from the full-rug images.
Design and Motifs
The whole field is drawn in the Herati, also called mahi or fish pattern: a diamond lattice with a rosette at each intersection and four lancet leaves curving around it like fish circling a pool. It repeats without a break across the entire indigo ground, which is the hallmark of Mahal Herati drawing carried into the Tabriz weaving tradition. The center medallion is a plain-sided diamond with a saw-tooth outline and small pendants at the 4 points, filled with its own scrolling vinework and 8 petal rosettes rather than a solid color. The ivory spandrels repeat the same lattice on a light ground, so the corners read as a change of value rather than a change of pattern. The main border runs a turtle palmette and rosette meander, framed by a repeating vine guard on each side and a fine barber-pole stripe at the outer edge, with the indigo selvedge finishing it cleanly.
A Dark Indigo Field Against Salmon and Ivory
The ground is a dark indigo that shifts toward aubergine where the light catches the pile, and it is doing the heavy lifting here: it pushes the dark salmon rosettes and the small ivory highlights forward so the lattice stays legible across 13 feet. The medallion, the main border and the field's densest flower heads share the same dark salmon rose, a slightly dusty red that has softened with age rather than faded unevenly. The two spandrels are a warm ivory with a faint cream cast, and they carry small notes of pink and rust in their vinework. Look closely at the border and field and you find the quiet accents that lift the whole palette: turquoise blue in the rosette centers, a mossy green in the palmettes, touches of camel and dark brown outlining the leaves. The fringe and warps are natural undyed cotton, white against the indigo end finish.
Tabriz Weaving and Origin
Tabriz sits in northwest Persia and has been the country's most commercially serious weaving city for centuries, working on vertical looms with the Raj system and producing everything from curvilinear court copies to disciplined all-over field designs like this one. This piece belongs to the second group: a sturdy, workmanlike weave with a firm handle, a dense knot count for a room size wool rug, and drawing that stays accurate through thousands of repeats of the same small motif, which is harder to hold than a single large medallion. The back, visible in the last photograph, shows tight, even rows with the pattern reading clearly through to the reverse, and the pile has worn down evenly rather than in patches. That combination of an honest wool pile, a cotton foundation and a design that never tires is exactly why these rugs stay in family homes for generations.
