9'9" x 12'2" Persian Sarough Rug | Dusty Rose All Over Floral Field | Ivory Palmette Border
Most room size Sarouks lean on a heavy red ground and a central medallion. This one does neither. The field of this Persian Sarough rug is a soft, mellow dusty rose, and instead of a medallion it carries an uninterrupted garden of small flowering plants from one end to the other. At 9'9" x 12'2" it covers a full living room or a 10 seat dining table with the chairs pulled out, and the drawing stays legible at that scale because the knotting is tight and the outlines are crisp. The pile is wool on a cotton foundation, hand-knotted, with the gentle patina that only comes from wool that has been walked on gently and cared for. Condition is excellent, with even pile and clean, straight sides, and every rug we sell ships with a certificate of authenticity.
Design and Motifs
The field is a true all over design, built from repeating vertical panels of tiny stylized blossoms set in rows, alternating with flowering shrubs, slender cypress and willow forms, curving leaf sprays and scattered lobed rosettes in ivory, gold and pale green. Larger palmette cartouches sit at regular intervals and give the eye somewhere to rest without ever becoming a medallion. The composition repeats in mirrored halves across the width, so both ends read the same from either side of the room. Framing it all is a wide ivory main border carrying a connected vine with paired serrated leaves, pink and red blossoms and upright flowering plants, flanked by a narrow navy band of small rosettes on the inside and a soft green outer guard stripe with its own running vine. The corners resolve cleanly, which on a piece this size is the mark of a weaver following a properly drawn cartoon.
A Dusty Rose Field With Ivory and Green Framing
The dominant color is a dusty rose, somewhere between old brick and faded salmon, warm rather than pink, and it shifts slightly in tone across the field the way naturally dyed wool does. Against it the small flowers are picked out in ivory, butter gold, sage green, silver grey and a deep navy that does most of the outlining work and keeps the pattern sharp. The main border is a warm ivory that reads almost cream in daylight, filled with rose, wine red, olive and cornflower blue, while the outer guard band brings in a soft celadon green that cools the whole edge and stops the rose from taking over. Deep navy minor stripes separate every band. It is a quiet, decorator friendly palette that sits easily with white walls, oak floors, walnut furniture and greenery, and it photographs beautifully in daylight.
Sarough Weaving and Quality
Sarough weaving comes from the villages around Arak in west central Persia, a region that has produced room size rugs for the American market for well over a century and built its reputation on durability. The wool from that area is springy and dense, the knotting is firm, and Sarouks are known for surviving decades of family traffic with the pattern intact. The back photograph here shows exactly that: even knot rows, no slack areas, and pattern definition on the reverse nearly as clear as on the face, which is how you judge the honesty of a weave. The pile is cut at a moderate height, enough to feel substantial underfoot without blurring the small floral detail, and the selvedges and fringes are sound. This is a workhorse of a rug that happens to be drawn with unusual delicacy.
