9'9" x 13'3" Persian Sarouk Rug | All-Over Floral with Diamond Medallion | Dark Orange Field, Excellent Condition
This 9'9" x 13'3" Persian Sarouk rug is the kind of piece that settles a big room without being asked twice. The dark orange field is covered edge to edge in small floral work, a compact stepped diamond medallion sits dead center, and a deep navy main border frames the whole thing with palmettes and rosettes. The wool pile measures 3/8" and is still even across the full surface, with clean straight selvages and tidy original fringe, as the corner and back photographs show. At this scale it reads as one of the more usable 10x13 Persian rugs we carry, formal enough for a front room and tough enough to live on. Every rug we ship leaves Freeport with a certificate of authenticity confirming origin, materials and hand-knotted construction.
Please Note About the Photographs:
The flat studio image reads brighter and more red than the rug actually is. The truest reading of the field is the deeper rust-toned dark orange seen in the two angled floor photographs taken in daylight. The close-up shots were taken under warehouse lighting to show knot detail, which pushes the oranges and pinks a shade hotter than they appear in a normal room.
Design and Motifs
The field is a true all-over floral composition rather than a single dominant medallion layout. Open rosettes, multi-petal blossoms, curling serrated leaves and small boteh forms repeat across a loose lattice of vine scrolls, each cluster outlined in navy and ivory so the drawing stays legible from standing height. At the center sits a small stepped diamond medallion on a navy ground, filled with a gold and green rosette flanked by paired palmettes, its outline drawn in a sawtooth ivory line that is repeated in the corner brackets where the field meets the border. The wide navy main border alternates large upright fan palmettes with lozenge rosettes and curved leaf stems, bracketed by narrow guard stripes carrying a running zigzag and a repeating four-petal blossom. The weaver kept the whole layout strictly symmetrical on both axes, with the small variations in blossom color that only hand knotting produces.
A Dark Orange Field with Navy and Multi-Color Detail
The ground is a warm dark orange with a rust undertone, the kind of tone that goes amber in lamplight and pulls slightly brick in daylight, which is exactly why this piece sits in our orange and rust Persian rugs selection rather than the straight reds. Against it the main border and the medallion ground are a deep inky navy, close to midnight blue, which gives the composition its weight and keeps the warm field from running away. The floral work inside the field carries the multi-color accents: ivory and cream outlines, sage and olive green leaves, soft rose and blush pink petals, pale sky blue blossoms, mustard gold centers, and small touches of deep burgundy and dark brown in the vine work. The outer edge finishes in a plain band of the same warm orange, and the fringe is natural undyed ivory cotton.
Sarouk Weaving in Central Persia
Sarouk is a weaving town in central Persia, in the Arak district, and the name has stood for durable formal floor rugs for well over a century. The Sarouk formula is a dense symmetrical knot on a strong cotton foundation with a slightly heavier pile than the fine city workshops attempt, which is why these rugs were historically the ones American houses bought to actually walk on. You can see the priorities in this piece: the back is tightly packed and uniform, the pile is clipped to a substantial 3/8" that resists crushing under furniture, and the design is drawn for legibility and repeat accuracy instead of miniature detail. Good local wool is the other half of the story, taking dye deeply and developing the soft surface sheen visible in the angled photographs. The result is a 9'9" x 13'3" rug built for a lifetime of daily use, with the color depth and even wear that collectors look for in a mature Sarouk.
