9' x 12' Chinese Aubusson Needlepoint Rug | Rose Bouquet Panel Grid | Brand New

This 9' x 12' Aubusson takes the quietest possible route to a large room: no medallion, no busy field, just a calm checkerboard of camel and ivory squares, each one holding a single painted bouquet. The wool surface sits low, roughly 3/8" deep, so the drawing reads as clearly as a printed chintz and furniture legs stay level on it. It is a decorator's piece rather than a tribal one, built to sit under a dining table or hold a full seating group without competing with anything above it. The rug is brand new and has never been used, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity describing the size, materials and origin exactly as listed above.

Please Note About the Photographs:

A few faint fold lines and shadows appear in the photographs where the rug was rolled and stored on the pallet. These are storage creases, not wear, not fading and not damage. They relax out within a few days once the rug is laid flat, and every rug is professionally steamed and pressed before it leaves us.

Design and Motifs

The field is divided into a grid of squares set on the diagonal alternation of a chessboard, the darker camel panels plain-ground and the lighter cream panels sprigged with tiny scattered dots and crosses. Inside each square sits its own bouquet, and no two repeat in the same order: full cabbage roses in coral and blush, open white morning glories with pale throats, tulips tied in a ribboned bunch, small daisies, hyacinth spikes and clusters of berries, all drawn with soft shading and trailing olive and sage leaves. It is a true all over composition, so the rug can be turned or shifted under furniture without losing its balance. The border is unusually restrained for this style: a single narrow band of twisted ribbon in red, gold, sage and cream, worked as short diagonal strokes, framed by plain camel guard stripes that let the field do the talking.

A Multi-Color Palette Built on Camel and Cream

The base tones do most of the work here. Warm camel and wheat gold carry the darker squares, while the alternating panels drop to a soft ivory cream, and the contrast between the two is gentle enough that from standing height the grid reads as a single golden expanse. Against that ground the flowers supply the color: coral and brick red roses as the strongest accent, blush and powder pink for the half-open buds, chalk white and palest apricot on the morning glories and lilies, and a muted olive to sage green through every stem and leaf. Touches of rust and terracotta appear in the ribbon border and in the outer guard. The overall effect is warm and faded rather than bright, the sort of multi-color scheme that works with antique wood, linen upholstery and painted furniture instead of fighting them.

Chinese Workshops and the Aubusson Tradition

Aubusson is a French design language, named for the workshops in central France that supplied the 18th century salon with flat, tapestry-like floor coverings of flowers and ribbons. Today the finest hand-worked versions of that idea come out of Chinese workshops, where the needlepoint technique is done stitch by stitch over a cotton foundation in hand-spun wool, and where this kind of large format panel field can be kept perfectly square across 12 feet. Look at the folded corner in the photographs and you can see how tight and even the structure is, with a clean flat back and a neatly finished selvage. As an Oriental rug with European drawing, it sits comfortably in formal and country interiors alike, and at 9 feet by 12 feet it lands in the most useful footprint we sell, alongside our other 9x12 area rugs.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
