Small Rugs (Under 4×6)
From about 4 by 6 up to 6 by 9 feet. This is the most heavily woven band in the history of the craft, because it is what a portable loom produces and what an ordinary house needed. Almost every weaving tradition is represented here, and the choice is wider than in any other size. The risk is the opposite one: buying at this size for a room that needs the next band up.
Why so much weaving is this size
A nomadic or village loom has to be carried, warped by one or two people and worked without scaffolding. That sets a practical width of about 5 or 6 feet and a length the weaver can reach up to. The Persian dozar, two zar, is roughly 4 and a half by 6 and a half feet and sits right in the middle of this band. So do most prayer rugs. Which is why Qashqai, Afshar, Shiraz, Kazak and Bokhara rugs are common here and rare above it, and why the village output of Hamadan arrives in this band by the thousand.
Where it works
Under a double bed, set crosswise so it emerges past the foot and both sides. Under a small dining table for two or four, provided the rug still reaches about 24 inches past the table edge so a pulled-out chair stays on it. In a study, under a desk and chair. In front of a fireplace with two chairs. As the whole floor of a small bedroom, a box room or a first-floor landing. In all of those the rug is doing the work of a rug rather than decorating the middle of the floor.
Where it does not
In a normal living room with a three-seat sofa and two chairs, a 5 by 8 will not reach the front legs of the seating. That is the test, and it is not negotiable: the front legs of every seat should stand on the rug. Fail it and the furniture floats, the rug shrinks and the room reads cheap. Almost everyone who makes this mistake does it by going one size down to save money, and the saving is visible from the door. Go to 6x9 to 8x10, or if the room is generous, straight to 8x10 to 10x14.
Practicalities
A rug in this band in wool weighs something between 15 and 35 pounds, so one person can move it, roll it and take it out to be cleaned. That matters more than it sounds: rugs that can be moved get cleaned, and rugs that get cleaned last. For the smaller formats and layering, see under 4x6, and for the whole ladder, rugs by size. Much of the best value in tribal weaving sits exactly here.
