10'1" x 13'3" Persian Tabriz Rug | Tomato Red Star Medallion | Excellent Condition

This is a full room size Persian Tabriz at 10'1" x 13'3", hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation with a 3/8" pile that still stands evenly across the whole field. Laid out on the warehouse floor it reads as one continuous drawing: a tomato red ground carrying a dense flowering lattice, a layered star medallion at the center, and a deep peacock blue main border that frames the whole thing without crowding it. The wool has the slight sheen that comes from good fleece and years of settling, and the sides and ends are intact with clean ivory cotton fringe. Among 10x13 Persian rugs this is the size that actually covers a dining table with chairs pulled out or anchors a wide living room wall to wall. Every rug we ship carries a certificate of authenticity confirming it is hand-knotted in Persia.

Design and Motifs

The center holds a many pointed star medallion built in rings: a small gold and green rosette at the core, a band of red and ivory petals, then a sky blue field of curling split leaves, then a dark navy outline with hooked points radiating out toward the field. Four pendants extend from the vertical axis. The red ground around it is never left empty, filled with palmettes, lotus blossoms, tulip heads and curled saz leaves joined by thin gold vinework that runs from corner to corner. The 4 spandrels are ivory, drawn with the same vocabulary at reduced scale so the corners read lighter than the field and set the medallion off. The main border carries large blossoms and rosettes on a serpentine vine, flanked by ivory guard stripes of small reciprocal flower heads, and the whole border system is drawn with the curved line and steady repeat that separates a town workshop piece from village work.

Tomato Red Field and Dark Peacock Blue Border

The field colour is a true tomato red, warm and slightly orange rather than the cooler burgundy you see in many Persian city rugs, and it shifts gently between a brighter and a deeper tone as the light crosses the pile. Against it the main border sits in dark peacock blue, a blue with a green cast that turns almost teal where the light hits it and drops to near navy in shadow. Between the two, ivory does the work: ivory spandrels, ivory guard stripes and ivory outlining on the blossoms keep the red and blue from fighting. Inside the drawing there is a full secondary palette of soft gold, olive green, terracotta, rose pink, pale sky blue and near black navy in the medallion core and the leaf outlines. It is a classic red and blue combination, which makes it easy to place in rooms with wood tones, brass, cream walls or darker traditional furniture.

Tabriz Origin and Weaving Quality

Tabriz sits in northwest Persia and has been the country's most organised weaving city for centuries, working from drawn cartoons rather than memory, which is why a piece this large keeps its medallion centered and its borders square over 13 feet of length. Fineness in Tabriz is counted in Raj, the number of knots across a gereh of roughly 2.75 inches, and the density here is a solid workshop grade weave that keeps the floral drawing crisp at every scale, including the small guard stripe flowers that most looms blur. The back, shown with the ruler in the last photograph, is tight and even with clear knot rows and no repairs or reweaves visible. The 3/8" wool pile is what makes this rug practical as well as decorative: dense enough to take traffic in a dining room or a busy living room, and heavy enough to lie flat without slipping once it is down.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
