10' x 12'8" Persian Geometric Rug | Deep Antique Red Field with Ivory Spandrels | Excellent Condition

This is a full room-size Persian rug, hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation and measuring 10' x 12'8", with a deep antique red field, a navy-black stepped medallion and four broad ivory corner spandrels that frame the whole composition. The pile is thick and even from end to end, the selvedges and fringes are sound, and the drawing has the confident, slightly irregular hand of true village weaving rather than a printed repeat. It is a rug built for real rooms: heavy, dense, and the classic proportion for buyers shopping 10x13 Persian rugs for a living room or a long dining table. Every rug we sell leaves Freeport with a certificate of authenticity recording origin, materials and measurements.

Please Note About the Photographs:

The overhead studio shot reads brighter and more crimson than the rug is in person. The floor photographs taken in daylight are the truest read: a deep antique red with real depth, not a hot scarlet. Colour differences between the images are lighting and camera, not variation in the weave.

Design and Motifs

The layout is the classic Persian geometric formula, drawn entirely in straight lines and stepped angles. At the center sits an ivory diamond medallion filled with an 8 point star and paired serrated leaves, set inside a larger navy-black lozenge with hooked pendants running north and south. Around it the red field carries angular vine work, squared-off palmette heads, small boxed cartouches and scattered rosettes in olive, rust and cream, with the corner spandrels repeating the same vocabulary on an ivory ground so that the eye reads medallion, corners, field in that order. The main border runs a navy ground with alternating rosettes and turtle-style palmettes linked by a serrated vine, flanked by ivory and red guard stripes. Buyers who like this kind of drawing usually want other geometric Persian rugs in the same family, and this one is a particularly well balanced example: the medallion sits true to center and the corners resolve cleanly on all 4 sides.

A Deep Antique Red Field with Navy, Olive and Ivory

The dominant colour is a deep antique red that shifts across the field as the pile catches light, moving from a warm brick tone in the open ground to a darker wine where the pile lays away from you. Against it, the medallion and main border are worked in a near-black navy that reads almost like ink at a distance and only opens up into true blue when you stand over it. The ivory is a soft natural cream rather than a bleached white, which keeps the corner spandrels and the medallion center from looking modern, and it is the element that makes the pattern legible from across a room. Olive green, muted gold and small touches of rust, terracotta and slate blue appear in the leaf forms, rosettes and border flowers, and a few pinpricks of green and burnt orange in the field give the palette its life. The back of the rug shows those same colours in clean, tight knot rows with no fading between front and back, which tells you the dyes went in properly.

Woven in Persia: Village Tradition and Weave Quality

This is Persian village weaving, produced the way it has been for generations: a cotton warp and weft strung on an upright loom, hand-knotted in local wool, and the pattern carried in the weaver's memory rather than worked from a fully drawn cartoon. That is why the field motifs vary slightly from side to side and why the medallion pendants are not mirror perfect, and it is exactly what separates a genuine hand-knotted piece from a machine copy. The wool is the important part here: a springy, high lanolin fleece that takes dye deeply and resists crushing, spun heavy and knotted at a robust density that gives the rug real weight and a pile that stands back up under furniture. Rugs woven at this gauge are the workhorses of the Persian tradition, meant to take decades of daily traffic and to look better once the surface has been walked in, and at 10' x 12'8" this one has the scale to anchor the main room of a house rather than sit in a corner of it.
