10' x 13'11" Modern Oriental Rug | Gray & Charcoal Abstract Chevron | Hand-Knotted Wool and Silk
This is a brand new, hand-knotted Oriental rug woven in India in a wool and silk pile, measuring 10' x 13'11". There is no border and no medallion here: the design runs edge to edge as a single abstract composition, charcoal chevrons breaking apart into torn, weathered shapes over a gray and ivory ground. Photograph 10 shows the back tag and the tape measure against the finished end, and photographs 6 and 7 show the dense hand-knotted reverse and the depth of pile. It is a sizeable rug that reads as a piece of art on the floor rather than as pattern, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is genuine hand-knotted work.
Design and Motifs
The drawing is built from 2 ideas layered over each other. The first is a run of tall chevron peaks, ikat in feeling, marching in vertical columns from one end of the field to the other. The second is an erosion layer: irregular islands and splinters of dark pile that eat into those peaks, so the zigzags appear half dissolved, like an old fresco flaking off a wall. The center of the field opens into a quieter gray passage with only scattered marks in it, which gives the eye somewhere to rest before the pattern gathers again toward the ends. There is no border and no framing guard stripe, so the composition simply stops at the selvage, which is exactly why it works under furniture: the busy areas stay legible even when a sofa or a dining table sits over part of the field. Close-up photograph 4 shows how cleanly the weavers held the diagonal line of each chevron across a high knot count, and photograph 8 shows the fine, deliberate speckling used to fade one shape into the next.
A Study in Gray, Charcoal and Ivory
The palette is entirely neutral and entirely tonal. The darkest notes are a near black charcoal used for the chevron bodies and the largest torn islands. Below that sit 2 mid grays, a cooler steel gray and a warmer smoke gray, which do most of the shading work and keep the transitions from looking printed. The ground alternates between a bright silvery white and a softer light beige, and in raking light, as in photograph 5, the silk content lifts the pale areas into a genuine sheen while the wool areas stay matte. That contrast between shiny and dull within the same color is the whole trick of the rug: the design changes noticeably depending on which end of the room you view it from, reading pale and airy from one direction and darker and more graphic from the other. In practical terms, a gray and ivory field of this scale sits comfortably with white walls, walnut, black steel and any of the warm neutral upholstery fabrics currently in fashion.
Indian Weaving and Quality of Construction
India is where the great majority of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted rugs are now made, and this piece shows why. The wool is spun for evenness rather than for bulk, the silk is used as a highlight rather than as a gimmick, and the knotting is tight and regular enough that the abstract shapes hold their outlines instead of stepping. On the cotton foundation the rug lies dead flat, and the folded corner in photograph 6 shows a clean, well packed back with a firm handle. In a size like this, close to 140 square feet, consistency across the whole field is the real test of a workshop, and the color runs true from end to end.
