9'11" x 13'9" Modern Wool and Silk Rug | Charcoal Gray Abstract Erosion Design | Hand-Knotted in India

This 9'11" x 13'9" piece is a brand new, hand-knotted wool and silk rug that reads as a single large abstract painting rather than a pattern repeat. A classical damask framework has been drawn in ivory and silk, then deliberately broken apart so that only fragments survive across a striated charcoal gray field, with no border to contain them. The silk carries the light shapes and the wool carries the dark ground, so the design shifts visibly as you walk around it. It is a contemporary Oriental rug in the true sense, knot by knot by hand, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming the weave, the materials and the origin.

Design and Motifs

The drawing starts from a traditional source: a lobed damask cartouche with curling vine arms and small leaf tips, the kind of motif that would normally sit inside a medallion and border layout. Here it has been scaled up, stacked three times down the length of the rug, and then eroded. Whole sections of the outline dissolve into isolated islands, dots and torn edges, the way old plaster flakes off a wall. Horizontal striations run through the ground and cut across the motifs, reinforcing the sense of weathering and giving the 165" length a strong lateral rhythm. The absence of a border is deliberate, so the composition bleeds off all 4 sides and the rug behaves like a field rather than a framed panel. Among modern and contemporary rugs, this is the harder trick to pull off: keeping the discipline of classical drawing while letting most of it disappear.

Charcoal Gray, Ivory and the Silk Highlights

The ground is charcoal gray, and it is not a flat charcoal. Abrash-like banding moves from near black through graphite to a lighter dove gray, which is what gives the field its depth in the wide floor shots. Sitting on top of it are ivory shapes that shade toward warm cream and champagne where the silk catches the light, particularly along the edges and in the corner detail. Between the ivory and the charcoal sits a third tone, a pale slate blue-gray, used for the inner scroll lines and the small drop shapes, and it is this cool middle value that keeps the whole palette from reading as plain black and white. In daylight the silk areas go almost bright; in lamplight they settle into a soft pewter. It is a disciplined 2 color scheme with a great deal happening inside it, which is why it holds up in rooms full of stone, glass, walnut or blackened steel.

Hand-Knotted in India

India is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted weaving now happens, and this rug shows why. The knotting is even and tight enough to hold a curved vine line at full scale, the wool has been clipped low enough to read the drawing clearly while keeping a soft, dense hand underfoot, and the silk has been placed only where the design needs light rather than scattered for effect. The folded-back photo shows a straight, consistent reverse with no rushed areas, and the selvages and ends are finished cleanly. At 9'11" x 13'9" it sits squarely in the 10x14 area rug range, large enough to carry all the furniture legs in a generous living room or to anchor a long dining table with chairs pulled back. Brand new, never used, and woven to last decades on a real floor.
