12'6" x 15'1" Modern Wool Rug | Solid Gray Tonal Field | Hand-Knotted in India, New

This is a quiet rug at a very loud size. At 12'6" x 15'1" it covers a great room wall to wall, and it does it with a single uninterrupted field of gray wool and no border at all. Every knot is tied by hand on a cotton foundation, and the original weaver's tags are still attached to the back corner, reading Genuine Hand Knotted Rug and 100% Wool Pile. Pieces this large in a plain solid ground are harder to find than patterned ones, because there is nowhere for a weaver to hide an uneven row, and buyers shopping oversize modern rugs know how rarely a solid field this wide comes out this even. It is brand new, never used, and ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming the hand-knotted construction, the wool content and the origin.

Please Note About the Photographs:

A few faint horizontal lines and soft shadows appear across the field in the wider photographs. Those are fold marks from the rug sitting rolled and stacked on a pallet, not wear, not fading and not damage. On a solid gray ground every crease catches the studio light, so they read more strongly in a photo than in person. They relax and disappear once the rug is laid flat, and every rug leaving our warehouse is professionally steamed and pressed before shipping.

Design and Motifs

There is no medallion, no spandrel, no guard stripe and no border. The entire design is the weave itself: fine vertical striations running the length of the rug where individual strands of gray and cream wool sit side by side, crossed by broad, slow horizontal bands of abrash where one dye batch of yarn gives way to the next. Up close, in the macro shots, you can see the effect clearly, thousands of small tonal shifts that behave like brushed linen or raw silk rather than a printed flat color. The pile is cut low and level, which is what lets that striation read at all, and the ends finish in a narrow flat woven ivory kilim with no fringe, keeping the outline clean. This is the kind of drawing that belongs with modern and contemporary rugs: it does not compete with furniture, art or architecture, it sits underneath all of it and holds the room together.

A Full Range of Gray in One Field

Solid is the wrong word for what this color actually does. The base is a mid silver gray, cool rather than warm, and it is shot through with undyed ivory and pale cream fibers that lift the whole surface toward light. Where the weave catches the light from one direction the field reads almost pale dove or oatmeal; turn it 180 degrees and the same wool reads a deeper pewter. A handful of darker charcoal strands run through in thin lines, giving the surface just enough grit to keep it from looking flat or machine made. There is no beige cast and no blue cast, which makes it unusually easy to place: it sits with white oak, walnut, black steel, marble and every shade of navy or olive upholstery. If you are comparing pieces across the grey and charcoal rugs we carry, this one sits in the lighter, more luminous half of that range rather than the dark end.

Hand-Knotted in India

India is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, and we say that without hedging. The weaving belt around Bhadohi and Mirzapur has the looms wide enough to take a 12'6" warp, the wool supply to keep a single color consistent across 15'1" of length, and generations of knotters who learned the craft on classical patterns before moving to modern ones. That training is exactly what a plain field demands. Every row has to be beaten down with identical pressure, because a heavy row or a light row shows instantly on a solid ground where a busy floral would swallow it. Turn the corner over and the back is tight, even and legible knot by knot, with a firm cotton foundation and no glue or backing of any kind. It is a genuine Oriental rug in the truthful sense of the term, built by hand to last decades, in a design that will still look current when it gets there.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
