9'3" x 12' Modern Oriental Rug | Solid Green Gabbeh Field | Hand-Knotted Wool, Brand New

A rug that does its work with one color. This 9'3" x 12' piece is hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation, and almost the entire surface is a single deep green field, broken only by a thin dotted outline and a scattering of small tribal figures in gold, orange, ivory and burgundy. It is a modern gabbeh-style Oriental rug, brand new and never used, and one of the easier 9x12 rugs to place because it reads as texture and color rather than pattern. Design and Motifs

There is no medallion and no formal border here. A single dashed line in gold runs a rectangle just inside the edges, the way a weaver would mark out a field by eye, and everything else floats freely. Along the top and bottom bands you find small ivory cypress trees, gold arrow heads and open chevrons, a few burgundy trees, and two larger stepped zigzags in gold that read like mountain ranges drawn with a stick. The motifs are deliberately unrepeated: no two corners carry the same set, and some quarters of the field are left completely empty. That restraint is what makes the piece work under furniture, since the drawing never competes with a sofa, a coffee table or a dining set.

A Field of Living Green

The green is the whole point. Up close the pile shows at least four tones layered together: a dark forest green in the shadows, a warmer olive running in vertical streaks, a brighter grass green where the light hits, and occasional cooler blue-green passages near the ends. Skeins dyed in separate lots were used across the width, so the field breathes instead of sitting flat like a machine-made solid. Against that ground the accents are small but deliberate, gold and burnt orange for the zigzags and dotted guard line, deep burgundy for the little tree figures, and chalk ivory for the cypress shapes. Among green rugs this is on the saturated, jewel-tone end, and it settles beautifully with walnut, brass, cream plaster and leather.

Hand-Knotted in India

India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, and this rug shows why. It is knotted row by row on a cotton warp, with a thick, springy wool pile and a back that is tight and evenly beaten down, as the folded corner photo shows. The weave is a village-scale gabbeh construction rather than a fine workshop knot, which is the right choice for a plain field: the heavier pile is what gives the color its depth and the surface its softness underfoot. At 9'3" x 12' it covers a full seating group or a table with chairs pulled out, and it sits naturally alongside our other modern and contemporary rugs.
