12' x 18'1" Jaipur Oriental Rug | Black All Over Floral Field | Hand-Knotted Wool, Brand New

This is a brand new, never used hand-knotted rug from Jaipur, India, woven in wool on a cotton foundation and measuring 12' x 18'1". It is a genuinely large piece, a true 12 x 18 oversize rug meant for a great room, a long formal dining room or a double-height living space where a 10x14 disappears. The drawing is classical: a black field carrying an all over floral repeat in gold, beige and soft green, framed by a wide beige and ivory border of shaded palmettes. The pile is thick and evenly clipped, the back is tight and regular, and the fringe is hand-finished at both ends. Every rug we ship carries a certificate of authenticity confirming it is hand-knotted, along with its size, materials and origin.

Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. The field is an all over composition built on a slender vine that loops the full length of the rug, carrying large shaded palmettes, curled saz leaves, 8 petal rosettes and small four-petal blossoms that repeat in mirrored pairs across the width. The palmettes are drawn in several sizes, from big fan-shaped blooms with layered petals down to tight buds on short stems, so the eye keeps finding new detail rather than reading one flat pattern. The main border is wide and generous: alternating crowned palmettes and paired leaf sprays on a beige ground, with a camel-toned guard on either side carrying small tulip buds and dark red rosette dots. The corners resolve cleanly, which is the mark of a cartoon that was drawn for this exact size rather than a pattern stretched to fit. Along the outer edge a narrow black selvage band closes the composition and ties the border back to the field.

The Black Field and Its Gold, Sage and Ivory Palette

Black is the anchor, and it is a deep, saturated black that makes everything laid on top of it look lit from within. Against it the weaver has worked old gold and honey camel for the palmette petals and vine stems, soft sage and celadon green for the leaves and the shaded centers of the larger blooms, and ivory to outline the drawing so the motifs stay legible at a distance. Small strikes of brick red and dusty rose appear at the heart of the rosettes and in the tiny bud forms, and those red points are what keep a black and gold rug from reading cold. The border reverses the balance: a warm beige to ivory ground with the same gold, green and red family, so the perimeter glows and visually lifts the black center. Shaded abrash within the gold tones, visible in the close-up photographs, is the natural result of hand-dyed wool and gives the surface depth under lamplight.

Jaipur Weaving and the Quality of This Rug

Jaipur, in Rajasthan, is one of the main centers of fine hand-knotted production in India, and India is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is now made.
