Design and Motifs

The field is an all-over floral in the classical Mughal manner, with no central medallion and no empty ground. Large round rosettes and split palmettes are set on a lattice of thin brown vine stems that cross and recross the field, each junction anchored by a smaller blossom or a serrated leaf. Between the big flowerheads sit clusters of tulips, buds and curling saz leaves, so the eye keeps finding a second layer of drawing inside the first. The composition is mirrored along both axes, which is why the pattern reads as orderly even though dozens of different flower forms appear. A narrow olive guard stripe separates the field from the wide beige main border, where paired palmettes and cusped floral cartouches alternate along the full length of the rug, with matching guard stripes on the outside. The corners resolve cleanly, a good test of a properly drawn cartoon, and the ends finish in plain ivory fringe.

Color: A Black Ground Lit by Rust, Olive and Gold

The ground is a true deep black that photographs almost ink-like in the overhead shots and warms toward charcoal under raking light.
