8' x 10'2" Jaipur Oriental Rug | Black Ziegler All Over Floral | Hand-Knotted Wool, Brand New

Rug number 6278 is a brand new 8' x 10'2" Jaipur piece, hand-knotted in India in the Ziegler manner: a deep black field carrying an all over floral drawing, framed by a wide ivory border. The wool is hand-spun, so it takes light the way good fleece does and the gold and sage drawing lifts off the black ground instead of sitting flat on it. It has never been on a floor, the pile stands full and even across roughly 81 square feet, and the sides and ends are sound and original. This hand-knotted Oriental rug ships with a certificate of authenticity recording its size, material, origin and weave, and the measured dimensions are documented in the photographs alongside the original weaver's tag. In this proportion it is one of the most useful shapes we carry, which is why we hold deep stock of 8x10 Oriental rugs.

Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. The field is a true all over floral design, built on a thin gold vine that meanders corner to corner and links a repeating set of large crowned palmettes, open lotus rosettes and long serrated acanthus leaves. Look at the close-up photographs and you can follow the hierarchy: big shaded palmettes anchor the long axis, a smaller 8 petal rosette sits at each junction of the vine, and curling split leaves fill the spaces between so the black ground never reads empty. The drawing is deliberately loose and generous in the Ziegler tradition, with soft outlines rather than hard contour lines. The wide ivory main border alternates stiff 8 petal star rosettes with a central leafy cartouche and paired red feather sprays, and it is contained on both sides by narrow gold guard stripes running a tiny flower and leaf meander. All 4 corners resolve cleanly, which is the first thing to check on a border this busy.

The Black Field, Ivory Border and Gold Accents

The ground is a dense, saturated black that reads nearly blue-black when the light rakes across the pile at an angle, and flat jet black when viewed straight down. Against it, the main palette is warm rather than cold: honey gold and antique brass in the palmettes, a dusty sage green in the leaf shading, brick red for the small flower heads and the fine outlining, plus touches of dove grey and clean ivory that give the blossoms their highlights. The border changes the temperature completely, moving to a soft cream ivory with a faint buttery cast, so the rug frames itself with light. The abrash is gentle, the dye lots are even end to end, and the gold vine work supplies just enough shimmer to keep a black field from going heavy in a dim room. If a dark ground is the deciding factor for you, compare it against the rest of our black Oriental rugs.

Jaipur Weaving and Quality

Jaipur, in Rajasthan, is one of the great modern weaving centers, and India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now made. We say that without hedging: the best Jaipur workshops hand-spin their own wool, use cotton warps and wefts, and knot on upright looms exactly as the old court workshops did, which is why a piece like this feels substantial under the hand rather than papery. This rug is woven to the Ziegler formula that Western buyers have asked for since the late 19th century, an open field, a generous border and softened color, and the execution is clean: straight selvages, square corners, a level clipped pile and a back with tight, regular knot rows, visible in the reverse photograph beside the tape measure. The weaver's tag confirms rug number 6278 at 8 x 10.2, and the label stitched with it records that the piece was made without child labour. For a brand new, never used wool rug at this scale, the finishing is what sells it.
