8' x 10'2" Jaipur Oriental Rug | Traditional All-Over Floral Field | Dense Hand-Knotted Wool

This is a traditional Oriental rug hand-knotted in Jaipur, India, and it reads as a quiet, warm neutral from across the room and as a crowded flower garden up close. At 8' x 10'2" it covers a standard living room seating group or a dining table for 6 with chairs pulled back, which puts it squarely in the most requested of all the 8x10 Oriental rugs we carry. The pile is wool on a cotton foundation, knotted at a dense gauge, so the surface is firm and compact underfoot rather than loose or floppy, and the drawing holds its detail because there are enough knots behind each flower to draw it properly. It is brand new and has never been used, with no wear, no repairs and no restoration anywhere on the rug, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity.

Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. The field is an all-over floral design, a continuous trellis of thin dark vine lines that loops from one end of the rug to the other and hangs lobed palmettes, open sunflower rosettes, small 8 petal flowerheads, serrated leaves and curling cloud bands off every turn. The repeat is loose enough that no two square feet look identical, which is the mark of a drawing worked from a cartoon rather than stamped out. The field is framed by a narrow inner guard stripe, then a wide main border on an ivory ground carrying large flowering palmettes linked by brown stems, then an outer band of small rosettes and leaf sprays. The corners are resolved properly, with the border pattern turning the angle instead of being cut off, and the ends finish in flat woven kilims and clean ivory cotton fringe.

A Gold Field Read Against Ivory and Earth Tones

The field is a soft honey gold that shifts with the light, a touch deeper and more amber where the pile lies away from you and paler, almost wheat, where it lies toward you. That makes this one of the easier gold and yellow rugs to live with, because the tone is warm without going brassy. The main border drops to a cool beige ivory, which is what gives the rug its outline and keeps the gold from spreading into the walls. Inside the flowers the palette is restrained and earthy: rust and apricot on the larger palmettes, olive and sage green on the leaves and a few rosette centers, and deep brown for the vine tracery and the smallest accents, the darkest notes on the whole rug. There is no bright red and no strong blue, which is why it sits comfortably with oak, walnut, linen, cream upholstery and brass.

Jaipur Weaving and the Quality of the Knotting

Jaipur, in Rajasthan, is one of the great living weaving centers, and India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now made. The best Jaipur workshops weave on cotton warps with handspun wool, use the classical floral repertoire, and are judged on exactly the two things you can check in the photographs: how tight the back is and how cleanly the wool takes dye. The folded corner shows a compact, even back with no slack rows and no shortcuts in the border turns, and the rolled edge shows how much wool is standing in the pile, which is what the dense weave designation on the tag refers to. Combined with a size that genuinely works in American rooms and a condition that is still factory fresh, this is a lot of hand-knotted rug for the money.
