8' x 10'2" Jaipur Oriental Rug | Black All-Over Floral Field with Gold Borders | Dense Wool, New
This is a new, never used hand-knotted rug from Jaipur, India, measuring 8' x 10'2" and drawn in the old traditional manner: a black field covered edge to edge in flowering vine, framed by a wide honey gold border. The wool pile is dense and tightly packed, cut low enough that every rosette, leaf tip and vine turn stays legible when you stand over it. At 96" by 122" it sits squarely in the 8x10 Oriental rug bracket that most living rooms and formal dining rooms are built around. Every rug we ship leaves Freeport with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is hand-knotted and stating the origin, materials and measurements.
Please Note About the Photographs:
One of the floor photos shows a soft shadow line near the top end where the rug was rolled in storage. That is not wear, not fading and not damage. It relaxes out once the rug is laid flat, and every rug is professionally steamed and pressed before it ships. The black field also photographs lighter or deeper depending on the angle of the light, which is normal for a dark ground wool pile.
Design and Motifs
The field is an all-over floral composition rather than a single centre medallion. A continuous lattice of thin vines carries rosettes, open palmettes and serrated leaves across the whole black ground, mirrored top to bottom and side to side so the drawing reads as one connected garden. At each end a pair of footed vases sends up tall flowering sprays toward the centre, and large scalloped gold cartouches break into the field from all 4 sides, two at the ends and two at the long edges, each one filled with its own curling paisley and blossom work. The main border runs alternating 8 petal rosette medallions and leafy boteh forms on gold, held between narrow burgundy guard stripes and finished with a black outer band carrying a small ivory dart motif that runs right up to the selvedge. Ivory cotton fringe closes both ends.
A Black Ground Read in Gold, Green and Wine
The field is a true deep black, closer to ink than charcoal, and it does the heavy lifting here: every warm colour laid on top of it gains a step of brightness. The borders and corner cartouches are an antique honey gold that shifts toward old brass where the light rakes across the pile, as the close-up border photos show. Inside the florals you get olive and sage green in the leaves, a dark wine burgundy outlining the rosettes and filling the guard stripes, apricot and soft rose in the flower heads, and small touches of ivory used as the highlight that separates one colour from the next. There is no harsh contrast anywhere, no bright white and no cold blue, so the whole piece settles into a warm, dim, candlelit range that flatters dark wood and leather and keeps a large room from feeling flat.
Woven in Jaipur, India
Jaipur in Rajasthan is one of the serious weaving centres of modern India, and India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, which is simply a fact of the trade today. A piece like this one is workshop production in the best sense: a cotton foundation, hand-spun wool, a knot count fine enough to carry curved vine work and cusped cartouche outlines without the lines going stepped or blocky, and a pile packed dense enough that the rug lies heavy and flat straight out of the roll. If you are weighing it against other weaving traditions, our guide on what separates a Persian rug from a broader Oriental rug explains how origin, drawing and construction differ. What you are buying at 8' x 10'2" is a brand new, never walked on floor piece with classical drawing and the kind of wool quality that will still look like this in 20 years.
