8'11" x 13'5" Jaipur Oriental Rug | Black Field All-Over Floral | Dense Wool, Never Used

This is a new, never used hand-knotted rug from Jaipur, and it is one of the darker, more dramatic pieces we carry at this scale. The field is a true black, filled edge to edge with flowering vinework in gold, apricot, olive and soft green, and framed by a deep burgundy border of palmettes and curling acanthus leaves. The pile is dense wool on a cotton foundation, clipped low enough that the drawing stays crisp and the colors read cleanly even in dim light. At 8'11" x 13'5" it works as the anchor piece in a formal room, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it as a genuine hand-knotted Oriental rug.

Design and Motifs

There is no medallion here. The weaver ran a full all-over floral design across the black ground, built from long serrated leaves, curling tendrils and open blossoms that repeat in mirrored pairs up the length of the rug. Look closely at the field detail and you will find layered forms: large lotus palmettes with teal and wine centers, clusters of 5 petal blossoms strung along thin red stems, and broad lanceolate leaves shaded from cream through apricot to rust so they appear to turn in the light. The main border carries a bolder rhythm of roses and split acanthus leaves on burgundy, separated from the field by a narrow gold scrolling vine guard stripe and closed on the outside by a black guard band with a paisley leaf meander. The corners resolve cleanly, which is a good sign the cartoon was followed properly rather than improvised at the ends.

A Black Ground With Burgundy, Gold and Green

Black grounds are uncommon in hand-knotted work at this size, and they change how a room reads. The field is a saturated ink black that makes every warm tone above it look lit from behind: honey gold, apricot, burnt orange and pale cream in the leaves and blossoms, with olive and deep teal green used for the smaller flower centers and leaf undersides. The main border is a rich burgundy, closer to wine than to tomato red, and the narrow guard stripes run gold with green scrollwork so the transition from border to field is gradual rather than abrupt. Small notes of crimson and ivory appear inside the flower heads and stop the palette from going flat. Against pale flooring, as in these photographs, the contrast is strong and graphic; against dark wood, the burgundy and gold do most of the talking.

Woven in Jaipur, India

Jaipur, in Rajasthan, is one of the centers where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted weaving now happens, and we say that without hedging. The workshops there took the classical floral repertoire and kept the standards: hand-spun wool, natural looking dye lots, tight symmetrical knotting on a cotton warp and weft, and a low even clip. On the back of this piece the knot rows are regular and the design reads clearly through the foundation, which is what you want to see before buying. The dense wool pile has the weight to sit flat and take traffic in a dining room or a wide living room, and among large hand-knotted rugs in this class it is unusually crisp for a piece that has never been used.
