8'7" x 11'8" Jaipur Oriental Rug | All-Over Floral Vine on Brick Red | Fine Dense Wool, Never Used

This is a heavy, densely knotted Jaipur weaving in one of the most useful room sizes there is, a true 9x12 that covers a full seating group and still leaves floor showing at the walls. The wool is the story in the hand: fine, dense and springy, cut at a medium pile that stands up cleanly under the fingers, as you can see where the rug is rolled back in the detail photographs. It has never been on a floor, the fringes are still full and even, and the selvedges are tight the whole way around. Design and Motifs

The field is drawn as a classic all-over floral composition with no central medallion, so the pattern reads the same from every seat in the room and tolerates furniture sitting on it. Thin vines travel corner to corner and carry broad open rosettes, 8 petal and 10 petal blossoms, small five point stars and long serrated saz leaves, with a repeating spiral cloudband tucked between the stems that gives the field its rhythm. At the center of each repeat sits a lobed cruciform palmette in mushroom brown and soft gold, shown in close up, its four lobes curling back on themselves in the Mughal manner. The main border runs a dark ground with alternating sunburst rosettes and split palmettes joined by curling leafwork, framed by a camel guard stripe on the inside and a brick red outer guard of small upright flower heads. The corners resolve cleanly, which is a fair test of how carefully this cartoon was drawn.

A Closer Look at the Colors

The field is a warm brick red that leans terracotta in daylight and deepens toward burgundy under lamplight, with a gentle natural variation across the width from the wool taking dye at slightly different rates. Against it the main border is a very dark navy that reads as black from standing height and only opens up to blue when you crouch over it, which is exactly what gives the rug its weight. Between the two runs a pale camel and buff guard stripe that keeps the red and the navy from fighting. The flowers are worked in ivory, cream, apricot, saffron gold and mushroom brown, with small hits of deep garnet at the flower centers and cool sage and celadon green through the leaves and vine work. Details are outlined in indigo, which is what makes each blossom sit forward off the red ground. The overall effect is warm and traditional rather than bright: reds, golds and greens on a dark navy frame.

Jaipur Weaving and Quality

Jaipur, in Rajasthan, is one of the great workshop centers of northern India and the reason so much of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work now comes out of India rather than anywhere else. The weavers there inherited the court floral vocabulary of the Mughal ateliers and still draw it by cartoon, knot by knot, on a cotton foundation. This piece shows the marks of a good workshop: an even knot count from end to end, straight sides, a back with clear grain and no puckering, and dense fine wool that has been sheared low enough to hold the outlines crisp. As an Oriental rug it is built to be lived on, and at 8'7" x 11'8" it is heavy enough that it will stay flat and quiet underfoot from the first day.
