8'1" x 10' Jaipur Oriental Rug | All-Over Floral on Black Field | Fine Wool, Never Used
This is a brand new, never used hand-knotted wool rug from Jaipur in Rajasthan, drawn in the classical traditional manner: a jet black field carrying an all-over floral repeat, enclosed by a broad ivory border of palmettes and paisleys. At 8'1" x 10' it is the workhorse of formal room sizes, and it is one of the cleanest versions of this layout we stock among our 8x10 Oriental rugs. The pile is dense and evenly clipped, the selvedges are tight, and the cotton warps end in a crisp natural fringe with no wear anywhere on the rug. Every piece we ship travels with a certificate of authenticity confirming that it is a genuine hand-knotted Oriental rug, knot by knot, with no machine work and no printing.
Design and Motifs
There is no central medallion here. Instead the weaver filled the field with a mirrored all-over floral design: large fan-shaped palmettes stacked up the center axis, big shield-like blossoms set in pairs to either side, and between them small 8 petal rosettes, tulip sprays, curling serrated leaves and thin red vine scrolls that tie the whole field together. Look at the close-up photos and the drawing resolves into dozens of separate flower heads, each outlined so it reads clearly against the dark ground. The main border is wide and runs an alternating rhythm of radiating rosettes and curled boteh paisleys, held between 2 narrow floral guard stripes and a fine reciprocal outer band, with the corners resolved properly rather than cut off mid-motif, which is the mark of a cartoon followed carefully to the end.
Black, Ivory and the Colors in Between
The field is a true, deep black, not a near-navy, and it gives the rug its weight and its drama. Against it the flowers are worked in warm camel gold, apricot, soft rose and oyster ivory, with forest and olive green in the leaves and deep burgundy in the flower centers and outlines. The palmettes along the center line shade from gold to green, while the paired side blossoms carry pale ivory and grey-blue petal cores with a wine red heart. The main border switches the balance completely: a clean ivory ground with burgundy, gold and sage drawing, framed by a dusty rose guard stripe on one side and a camel gold stripe on the other, both edged in fine black lines. For anyone shopping black and ivory rugs, the contrast is about as crisp as this palette gets, and the warm secondary tones keep it from ever reading cold.
Jaipur Weaving and Quality
Jaipur, in Rajasthan, is one of the great hand-knotting centers of modern India, and India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now made. That is not a consolation prize: the looms there run fine traditional cartoons with disciplined knotting and well spun wool, and this rug shows it. The back is tight and regular, the knot rows are even from side to side, and the wool takes light with a quiet sheen rather than the flat chalkiness of cheaper production. The pile is full enough to handle a dining table and chairs or heavy living room traffic without crushing, and because the rug has never been on a floor, you are buying the full life of that pile. Hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation, it is built to be used for decades, not seasons.
