This is a brand new hand-knotted Jaipur rug, woven in wool on a cotton foundation and drawn from an antique Agra pattern book rather than a modern print. At 8'11" x 12'1" it falls into the standard 9x12 area rug class, which means it will run under a sofa group with all four legs on the pile or seat a table for 8 with chairs pulled back. The pile is still full and upright, the fringe untouched, and the handle is heavy and supple in the way a good Indian hand-knotted rug should be. Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. The field carries a classic all-over floral design, built from large serrated palmettes, 8 petal rosettes, lotus heads and small floral sprays linked by a thin brown vine that only reveals itself when you look closely. The repeat is staggered rather than mirrored, so the eye keeps moving across the rug instead of locking onto one point. The main border is generous, set with alternating apricot cartouche palmettes and round gold rosettes on a burgundy ground, separated by curling olive leaves and paisley forms. Two narrow beige guard stripes, each filled with a tiny repeating flower sprig, seal the border top and bottom and pull the whole composition together at the edges.

A Burgundy Field With Beige and Gold Drawing

The ground is a deep burgundy, closer to wine than to fire red, and it shifts very slightly in tone down the length of the rug where the dye lot changed, a natural striation you can see in the close-up shots. Against that ground the drawing is done in cream, wheat gold, soft apricot and pale sage, with rust brown and charcoal used for outlining so each flower head stays crisp. The wide border reads beige to camel depending on the light, which is what keeps a dark red rug from feeling heavy in a room. Olive green leaves and small salmon buds give the palette its warmth, and the overall effect sits comfortably with brown wood floors, taupe and oatmeal upholstery, and brass or antique gold lighting.

Jaipur Weaving and Quality

Jaipur, in Rajasthan, is one of the workshop centers that made India the place where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now produced. The weavers there work from antique Agra and Amritsar cartoons, hand spin and dye their own wool, and knot at a density high enough to hold the fine outlining you see in the border. This piece is an Oriental rug in the proper sense of the term: hand-knotted, wool on cotton, no machine involvement at any stage. The back shows even, regular knotting with the pattern fully legible, and the selvedges are tight and straight, both signs of a well-run loom and a rug built to take decades of traffic.
