8' x 10' Jaipur Oriental Rug | Burgundy & Gold All Over Floral | Hand-Knotted Wool, Never Used
Two colors carry this rug: a deep burgundy field and a wide gold border that holds it, and almost every other tone in the weave sits somewhere between those two. The 8' x 10' format is the workhorse room size, and this one fills it with a traditional all over floral drawing rather than a single medallion, so the pattern reads evenly from any seat in the room. It is hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation, brand new and never walked on, with a thick even pile and straight selvages, and it ships with our certificate of authenticity.
Please Note About the Photographs:
The flat overhead photograph was shot under cooler studio light and reads a shade lighter and pinker than the rug actually is. The floor photographs and the close-up details are the truer reading: a deeper burgundy field with warm honey gold borders. Nothing in those differences is wear, fade or damage, and every rug is professionally steamed and pressed before it leaves us.
Design and Motifs
The field is built on a repeating floral lattice. Thin gold vines curve out, cross, and lock into a diamond grid, and at each crossing sits either a large round rosette drawn in concentric rings or an upright serrated palmette flanked by two curling leaves. Smaller four lobed blossoms and single leaves fill the gaps, so there is pattern everywhere but no crowding. Because the drawing is an all over floral design rather than a centered medallion, a coffee table or a dining table can sit anywhere on it without covering the focal point. The border system is three deep: a plain burgundy outer band, then the wide gold main border carrying burgundy blossoms and long olive leaves on a sweeping vine, then narrow reciprocal guard stripes that step along both edges in red and gold. Corners resolve cleanly, which is the first place a hurried weave usually gives itself away.
A Warm Burgundy and Gold Palette
The ground is a true burgundy, closer to wine than to tomato red, and it is not a flat color: the handspun wool takes dye unevenly, so fine vertical striations of lighter raspberry and darker oxblood run through the field and give it depth under lamplight. The borders move from honey gold at the outside to a softer camel and wheat where the pile catches light, with pale ivory highlights on the vine. Inside the flowers the palette widens: dusty olive green in the leaves, burnt rust and apricot in the palmette tips, and a quiet walnut brown that shades the rosette centers. Olive against burgundy is what keeps the rug from reading as a plain red and gold scheme, and the rust accents pick up warm wood and leather. Cream fringe and a dark selvage finish the ends.
Woven in Jaipur, India
Jaipur, in Rajasthan, is one of the main weaving centers of northern India, and India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now produced. Weavers there work from traditional classical cartoons, which is exactly what this rug is: a classical floral vocabulary, drawn and knotted by hand, in colors chosen for modern rooms. The back shows an even, well packed knot across the full width, with no pulling at the ends and no bowing along the sides, and the pile is dense enough to stand up under a dining table or a busy family room. If you are weighing this against Persian weaving, our guide to what separates a Persian rug from a broader Oriental rug explains where the lines are actually drawn, and the rest of our Indian and Oriental rugs sit alongside this one.
