8' x 10'6" Jaipur Oriental Rug | Black and Gold All-Over Floral | New, Never Used Wool Pile
This 8' x 10'6" hand-knotted Jaipur rug has never been walked on. The wool pile still stands at full height, the fringe is even and untrimmed, and the selvedges are tight along all 4 sides. The weavers set an all-over floral drawing on a jet black ground and framed it with a wide camel gold border, which is harder to execute than it looks, because a dark field shows every irregularity in the knotting and this one stays clean from end to end. Wool pile on a cotton foundation, about 84 square feet of coverage, it sits in the 8x11 Oriental rugs bracket that most living and dining rooms are planned around. It ships with our certificate of authenticity recording origin, materials and measurements.
Design and Motifs
There is no central medallion. The field is an all over floral design, built from offset rows of large 8 and 12 petal rosettes and lobed palmettes, joined by slender vines that carry serrated leaves, small tulip buds and tiny 5 petal blossoms into every gap. The drawing mirrors on both axes, so the repeat reads as a continuous garden rather than a stack of panels, and it stays legible from the center of the room as well as up close. The main border takes a single curling vine through a procession of broad rosettes and leaf sprays, and the outer band in deep green alternates upright palmettes with feathered leaf forms. Three narrow guard stripes separate the field from the borders, outlined in burgundy and picked out with pale ivory and salmon florets, which is what keeps the heavy gold border from crowding the black ground.
Color Palette
Black does the structural work here, a dense true black with no streaking across the full 10'6" length, which is why this reads as one of the more dramatic black Oriental rugs rather than a dark navy. Against it the flowers are worked in camel gold, honey and old ivory, with shrimp, a soft salmon pink, used on the petal edges and bud tips so the blooms lift off the ground. Greens run two ways: a sage and celadon inside the rosettes, and a deeper olive green in the outer border band. Burgundy and oxblood outline the palmettes, and there are small touches of dusty blue-grey in the calyxes, visible in the close-up photographs. The main border is a warm gold that shifts with the light: in the flat overhead image it reads bright and sandy, while in the angled floor shots the same wool looks deeper and more bronze. Both are the same rug seen under different lighting.
Jaipur Weaving and Quality
Jaipur, in Rajasthan, is one of the workshop centers that made India the source of most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work. Looms there are vertical, the warps are cotton, the pile is hand-carded wool, and the drawing is followed from a graphed cartoon knot by knot, which is why a fine floral like this can be held to its line through more than 10 feet of repeat. Turn the corner over and the back tells you what you are buying: straight knot rows, no slack, an even grain with no ridges, and a low clipped pile that keeps the detail of the small blossoms sharp instead of blurring them. That combination of a tight weave and a classical floral layout is exactly what buyers mean when they ask for a traditional Oriental rug they can put under a dining table and still hand down.
