This is a big, calm, seriously well made floor piece: 12'1" x 14'10" of hand-knotted wool worked in the Agra manner, with a rust field carrying an all over floral lattice and a wide gold main border. It has never been on a floor. The pile is full, the selvages are tight, the fringes are clean and white, and the back shows an even cotton foundation with no repairs, no reweaves and no thin spots. Design and Motifs

The field is an all over design rather than a medallion layout, which is exactly what you want at this size, because the pattern keeps working no matter where the furniture lands. Thin gold vines travel the full length of the rug and link a repeating vocabulary of large crowned palmettes, 8 petal rosettes, split leaf arabesques and curling acanthus fronds, with small buds and star rosettes filling the open ground between them. The drawing is bold and generously scaled, in the Agra tradition, so each motif reads clearly from standing height instead of dissolving into busyness. Three borders frame the field: a wide gold main band carrying alternating tulip sprays, vases and leafy palmettes, flanked by narrow reciprocal trefoil guard stripes in cream and brown that give the whole rug a crisp outline. Notice the small drawing changes from one repeat to the next, palmettes that sit slightly differently, a leaf that curves the other way. That is the hand at the loom, and it is the difference between a knotted rug and a printed one.

Rust, Gold and Green Color Story

The field is rust, and it is a warm, slightly earthy rust with terracotta and soft brown depth rather than a hard tomato red. Because the wool takes dye unevenly by nature, the ground moves subtly across the rug, reading a touch deeper toward the ends and lighter through the center, an abrash effect that gives the surface life under lamplight. Against that, the main border is a soft antique gold that shifts toward straw and pale camel where the light hits the pile at an angle. The motifs themselves are drawn in a layered palette: buttery gold and cream on the palmette bodies, ivory outlines on the rosettes, ochre and apricot in the smaller flowerheads, and cool accents of deep teal green and sage in the leaves and calyxes.
