11'8" x 14'10" Agra Oriental Rug | Black & Gold All-Over Floral | Brand New Hand-Knotted Wool
This is a big, quiet, confident piece of weaving: 11'8" x 14'10" of hand-knotted wool on a cotton foundation, with a black field carrying an all-over garden of gold and ivory palmettes inside a wide antique gold border. It is brand new and has never been on a floor, so the pile still stands full and the colors are at their strongest. At this scale it belongs in the group of oversize rugs in the 12x15 range that cover a great room wall to wall, and as a hand-knotted Oriental rug it ships with our certificate of authenticity documenting size, materials and origin.
Please Note About the Photographs:
The field photographs as a solid black in the full overhead shot and as a warm charcoal brown in the close-up images. Both are accurate: the ground wool is dyed very dark and reads black under overhead light, then shows its warm brown depth when light rakes across the pile. Nothing here is fading, wear or a color flaw.
Design and Motifs
There is no central medallion. Instead the weaver ran a continuous all-over floral design across the whole field, a lattice of thin curling vines that ties together large fan-shaped palmettes, 8 petal rosettes, split leaves and small budding blossoms. The drawing repeats in mirrored pairs along the length, so the eye reads order at a distance and detail up close. The main border is drawn on a pale gold ground with alternating dark rosettes and burgundy tulip heads, flanked by narrow guard stripes carrying a running vine and tiny boxed florets. Corners are resolved cleanly, with the border pattern turning rather than colliding, which is a good sign of a drawn cartoon and an experienced hand at the loom.
Black Ground, Antique Gold Border
The color story is simple and expensive looking. A very dark ground, black in most light with a warm brown undertone where the pile catches the sun, sets off flowers in old gold, honey, camel and clean ivory. Burgundy and dusty rose run through the petal centers and outline the border blossoms, and a muted olive green appears in the leaves and in some of the palmette shading. The border shifts to a soft sand gold that lifts the whole rug and keeps the dark field from feeling heavy. Abrash, the gentle horizontal shading natural to hand-dyed wool, is visible across the field in the close-up photographs and gives the black real depth instead of a flat printed look.
Agra Weaving, Made in India
Agra has been a weaving center since the Mughal court workshops, and the classical palmette and vine repertoire seen here comes straight out of that tradition. This rug is honestly and openly made in India, where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is now produced, and the quality shows in the things that are hard to fake: even knotting across a 140" width, straight selvages, a flat lie with no buckling at this size, and a firm wool pile with enough body to hold a room of furniture. The back, visible in the fold-over photograph, shows a clear, tight knot grid on a cotton foundation with the design reading crisply from the reverse.
