6'2" x 9' Oriental Rug | Tabriz Design Burgundy All-Over Floral | Fine Wool, Never Used
This 6'2" x 9' rug is hand-knotted in fine wool on a cotton foundation and drawn in the Tabriz manner: a deep burgundy field covered edge to edge in flowering vinework, held inside a wide ivory main border and 4 narrow guard stripes. The pile is clipped low and even, which is what lets the small flower heads and the thin connecting stems stay legible instead of blurring together, and the hand is firm enough that the rug lies flat without buckling. It has never been used, with full fringe, square corners and uncut selvedges, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it as a genuine hand-knotted piece. Among our 6x9 Oriental rugs this is one of the more finely drawn traditional pieces, formal in feel but dark enough in the field to live with daily traffic.
Design and Motifs
There is no medallion. The field is a true all-over composition, built on a lattice of curling arabesque vines that carry serrated palmettes, 8 petal rosettes, lotus blossoms, tulip buds and feathered acanthus leaves. The drawing is mirrored down the center axis and repeats on a long vertical interval, so each half of the field answers the other without the pattern reading as a mechanical stamp. Small cypress-like leaf clusters and split palmettes fill the gaps between the larger flower heads, and the vine work is outlined in a dark tone so the stems read as drawing rather than filler. The ivory main border runs a reciprocal procession of large palmettes alternating with leafy sprays, separated from the field by a thin sage stripe and bracketed by floral guard bands. All 4 corners resolve cleanly, with the border pattern turning the corner properly instead of being cut off, which is a fair indicator of a drafted cartoon and a disciplined weaver.
Burgundy, Ivory and the Soft Rose Palette
The field is a deep wine burgundy, closer to claret than to tomato red, and it photographs almost black-red in the overhead shot while the close-up detail shows the true plum-leaning tone. Against it the flower heads are worked in chalky ivory, soft antique rose, dusty pink and pale apricot, with sage and olive green reserved for the leaves and for the thin stripe that frames the border. Small touches of slate blue and warm gold appear inside the rosette centers, which keeps the palette from going entirely warm. The border is a clean cream ivory that lifts the whole piece and gives the dark field a bright edge, and the fringe is the same undyed ivory cotton. Overall the color story is traditional and quiet: dark anchor, pale frame, and a muted mid-tone floral range that sits easily with mahogany, walnut and brass, and reads as a rich burgundy from across the room rather than a bright red.
Origin and Weaving Quality
This piece was made in China, where workshops have long woven the classic city patterns of the Near East to a high standard, and it is honestly described as an Oriental rug in the Tabriz design tradition rather than as a product of that city. What matters on the floor is the weave itself, and the detail photographs show it clearly: a tight, regular knot, a low clipped pile, and fine enough resolution to carry stems only a few knots wide without losing the line. The back is even, the handle is supple but substantial, and the selvedges are wrapped tight. Image 6 shows the ruler laid across the border with the authentic hand-knotted tag, taken at the fringe end so the knot density and the individual rows are visible. For a buyer who wants a formal, finely drawn traditional floral in a true room size, this is a lot of drawing and a lot of wool for the money, in new and never-used condition.
