8'1" x 8'2" Round Oriental Rug | Wool & Silk Tabriz Design | All Over Floral, Never Used

A true round is harder to weave than it looks, and this one is drawn cleanly: a full circle of burgundy filled edge to edge with flowering vinework, ringed by a deep black border and finished with a heavy hand-knotted ivory fringe. The pile is wool with silk worked into the flower heads, so the blossoms catch light a half tone brighter than the ground around them. It has never been on a floor, the pile stands upright with no crushing or shading from use, and the color is fresh. Each rug we ship carries a certificate of authenticity confirming that it is hand-knotted, along with its measurements, materials and origin.

Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. Instead the weaver used a classic Tabriz-style layout of all over floral rugs, a continuous lattice of thin scrolling vines carrying lotus palmettes, round rosettes, small carnation sprays and serrated leaves, with tiny 8 point stars and rice-grain fillers dropped into the open red between them. Because the field is a circle, the drawing is laid out radially, so the pattern reads correctly from any chair around a round table. The main border is a black band of large fan palmettes alternating with rose and cream blossoms on curling stems, and it is fenced on both sides by narrow ivory guard bands of linked flower heads. A thin burgundy outer ring and a plain burgundy selvedge close the circle before the fringe begins.

A Burgundy Field Against Black, Ivory and Green

The ground is a deep wine burgundy, closer to oxblood than to bright red, and it stays even across the whole field with only the natural light-and-dark shift that comes from pile direction. Against it, the flowers are painted in ivory, cream, buttermilk and soft peach, with saffron and old gold centers and occasional powder blue petals that keep the palette from going too warm. Leaves and vine work are sage and olive green, which is what visually cools the red and ties the field to the border. That border is a true black, not navy, and the contrast is what gives the rug its formal frame; inside it the palmettes repeat the same cream, rose, gold and green found in the center, with a small burgundy cartouche behind the largest flower heads. The guard stripes are ivory with brown-gold vine, so the eye steps from red, to ivory, to black, to ivory, and out to the natural undyed fringe.

Origin and Weaving Quality

This piece was hand-knotted in China, where workshops have long reproduced the classical Tabriz floral repertoire at a high knot count for the export market. The construction is the standard for good work of this type: a cotton warp and weft carrying a wool pile with silk used selectively in the flowers, which is why the blossoms read glossy while the field stays matte and hard-wearing. Detail like the thin single-line vines and the small 8 point stars only holds together at a fine weave, and here the outlines are crisp with no wobble along the curves. Calling it an Oriental rug is the accurate description of what it is: a hand-knotted piece woven in the Eastern tradition, finished with a hand-tied fringe and a tight, flat selvedge that keeps the circle from cupping.
