Design and Motifs

The drawing follows the classic Tabriz formula: an all-over floral design rather than a single central medallion, built from thin brown vines that curve, split and reconnect across the whole field. Hanging off those vines are large fan-shaped palmettes, ribbed rosettes, small 5 petal blossoms and feathery serrated leaves, all mirrored across the long and short axes so the field stays balanced without ever repeating a run exactly. A small floral star sits at the centre point where the vine system pivots. The border system runs 5 bands deep: a narrow black outer guard with delicate acanthus scrollwork, a wide beige band carrying paired rosettes and green leaf curls, the broad burgundy main border with alternating palmettes and flower sprays, then a second beige guard and a black inner line that frames the field cleanly. The corners resolve properly, which is the tell of a well-drawn cartoon rather than a rushed one.

A Black Field With Blush, Cream and Burgundy

Black grounds are difficult to do well, and this one is dense and even, with no streaking across the width. Against it the palette is deliberately soft: cream and ivory in the large palmettes, warm beige and pale gold in the smaller blossoms, blush and light pink in the rosette petals, with sage and olive green reserved for the leaves. The silk sits in the highlights, so the pink and cream flowers read glossy while the wool ground stays matte, and the contrast shifts as you walk around the rug. The main border is a deep burgundy that leans wine rather than orange-red, which is what keeps the whole thing dressy instead of loud, and the beige guard bands give the eye a rest between the black field and the red. Origin and Weaving Quality

This rug was made in China, in the workshop tradition that took the fine Tabriz cartoons and wove them at a high knot count in wool with silk accents. The pile is clipped low so the fine vine work holds its line, and the cotton foundation gives the rug the weight and flatness you want in a large size.
