This is a hand-knotted wool and silk floor rug measuring 8'6" x 11'10", woven on a cotton foundation in the classical Tabriz floral idiom and never put down in a home. It sits squarely in the space most buyers shop as 9x12 area rugs, large enough to carry a full seating group or a 10 seat dining table with chairs pulled back. The pile is dense and evenly clipped, the fringe is original and full at both ends, and the silk passages catch light across the ivory ground as you walk around it. Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. The field is a true all over floral composition, built on thin curving vines that link serrated palmettes, layered rosettes, full blown cabbage roses and small star flowers in a mirrored repeat that reads the same from either end of the room. Large curled acanthus leaves swing between the blossom clusters and give the drawing its movement, while tiny 5 petal buds fill the gaps so the ground never looks empty. The border system runs 5 bands deep: a broad main border of rose palmettes and paired roses on a pale ground, framed inside and out by narrow guard stripes of running vine and repeating bud heads, with a final outer stripe holding the whole rectangle tight. Corners are resolved cleanly, with the main border pattern turning rather than colliding, which is the mark of a drawn cartoon rather than a copied one.

A Soft Ivory Palette with Rose, Burgundy and Green

The ground is a warm ivory, closer to unbleached cream than to stark white, and it is what makes this piece work in bright rooms. Against it the flowers move through a full rose range: dusty pink, antique blush, deeper rose and, at the darkest point, a burgundy that verges on wine in the palmette centers. Green appears as muted sage and a deeper pine in the leaves and calyxes, and a handful of pale blue grey petals turn up in the smaller blossoms, cooling the whole scheme. The borders shift to a soft mauve rose ground, a half step darker than the field, so the frame separates without ever going heavy. Silk is used selectively in highlights and petal edges, and it reads as a quiet sheen rather than a shine, which keeps the palette calm. This rug was made in China, in a workshop weaving to the Tabriz drawing tradition, and the back photograph shows what that means in practice: straight, regular rows, tight knot lines and a firm cotton foundation with no slack or wobble in the weave. Chinese workshops of this grade buy good wool, blend in real silk for the highlights and work from a full scale cartoon, which is why the curved vines stay curved and the corners resolve.
