Design and Motifs

There is no medallion here. The field carries a full all-over lattice of curved vines that links large split palmettes, multi petal rosettes and small paired blossoms in a repeating diamond rhythm, with a crisp 8 petal rosette anchoring the center of each diagonal. Serrated acanthus leaves and tiny bud sprays fill the ground between the larger flowers, and the drawing stays curvilinear throughout, which is what separates a Tabriz style cartoon from a village geometric layout. The border system runs 5 bands: a wide beige main border of alternating palmette bouquets and flowering stems, flanked by narrow floral guard stripes and outer ivory selvage bands, with the corners resolved cleanly so the pattern turns without a break. The finishing is equally careful, with a level shear, straight sides and hand-finished ivory fringe at both ends.

A Study in Ivory, Beige and Soft Pastels

The field is a warm ivory, closer to fresh cream than to stark white, and it shifts slightly with the light because the silk detailing catches at a different angle than the wool. Against that ground the flower heads are drawn in blush and rose pink, soft sage and olive green, wheat gold, and a muted light blue that appears in the flower centers and reads almost grey from a standing height. Outlines are worked in coffee brown and deep aubergine, which is what keeps such a pale palette from going flat. The main border steps up to a soft beige, almost the tone of café au lait, giving the ivory interior a visible frame, and the guard stripes carry a pale celadon that cools the whole scheme. Origin and Weaving Quality

This rug was made in China, in the fine hand-knotted tradition that workshops there have built over the last several decades by copying the great northwest weaving cartoons stitch for stitch. The design is Tabriz, but the hands and the looms are Chinese, and we say so plainly. What you get for the money is a genuinely high knot count, tight enough for the vine work to stay thin and unbroken across 14 feet, combined with a well spun wool pile and silk accents that are used with restraint on the flower heads and leaf tips rather than sprayed across the whole field. The back, shown in the photographs, is even and clearly defined, the knots sit uniformly on a cotton warp and weft, and the selvages are wrapped by hand.
