Design and Motifs

The drawing is a classic Tabriz floral medallion, adapted to a circle so that every element radiates from one point. At the center sits a small 16 petal rosette ringed in dark outline, set inside a soft green cartouche of curling cloudband forms and pale blue leaflets. From there the field opens into a dense, concentric spread of palmettes, rose sprays, serrated leaves and thin scrolling vine that circles the medallion in rings rather than rows. The border system is unusually rich for a round rug: a wide ivory main band carrying alternating rose clusters and leafy meanders, framed by sage green minor bands and narrow camel guard stripes, with a final fine outline just inside the fringe. The curved line work stays continuous the whole way around the circumference, with no awkward joins where the pattern closes.

A Palette of Ivory, Sage Green and Burgundy

The ground is a warm ivory, closer to cream than to white, which keeps the rug from reading cold in a room with pale walls. Against it the weaver worked a muted sage or celadon green through the inner bands, the medallion surround and the leaf work, a green that has been softened rather than saturated. Burgundy and deep rose carry the flower heads and give the field its depth, while camel, honey gold and tobacco brown run through the vine, the palmettes and the guard stripes to tie the whole circle together. Small touches of slate blue and dark olive appear inside the blossoms and in the medallion core, visible in the close photographs. Where the silk falls, mainly in the highlights of the medallion petals and the scrolling vine, the tone shifts a shade lighter or darker as you walk around the rug.

This piece was hand-knotted in China, where the better workshops have spent decades weaving the classical Tabriz repertoire on fine cotton warps, often with silk worked in for the highlights. The back photograph tells the story: small, even knots, tight straight rows following the curve, and a clearly legible pattern on the reverse, which is the honest test of weave quality on any hand-knotted rug. The pile is clipped low so the fine curved drawing stays crisp, and the selvedge is wrapped evenly around the full circle.
