Design and Motifs

The layout is the classic Tabriz composition, drawn with curved line rather than the angular village style. A large lobed medallion sits dead center, built in concentric rings: a small navy rosette at the core, a ring of scrolling vinework, then a wreath of 8 cartouche-shaped petals filled with individual blossoms, and a pointed pendant north and south. The surrounding field is not left open, which is the ambitious choice here: it is filled edge to edge with palmettes, serrated saz leaves, split arabesques and small five-petal flowers, all connected by a continuous thin vine so the eye keeps traveling. The 4 corner spandrels repeat the medallion vocabulary in miniature on a pale ground, and the main border runs a steady alternation of large palmettes and paired leaf sprays, framed on both sides by narrow guard stripes of running flower heads. The border drawing is unusually detailed for a rug this size, with tiny outlined buds that only resolve when you stand over it.

Burgundy, Taupe and Ivory: Reading the Palette
